Alex C. Niezgodski

July 13, 1926 - April 9, 2001

Alex C. Niezgodski, 74, of South Bend, Ind., passed away on Monday, April 9, in Saint Joseph's Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Niezgodski was born on July 13, 1926, in South Bend, to the late Alex R. and Cecelia (Jamrozy) Niezgodski. On Jan. 31, 1947, he married Genevieve S. Leja, who preceded him in death on Dec. 31, 1988.

He is survived by four sons, Ronald L. (Katie) Niezgodski of South Bend, David L. Niezgodski of South Bend, Alex L. Niezgodski of South Bend and Michael L. (Dawn) Niezgodski of South Bend; grandchildren, Bobby, Rachael, Grant, Brandon, Kelsey and Abby Niezgodski; and by a brother, William (Barbara) Niezgodski of South Bend.

Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. today, April 11, in the KANIEWSKI Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend, where an Achievement Forum Rosary will be held at 4 p.m.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. on Thursday, April 12, in St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. Entombment will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, where the American Legion, Pulaski Post #357, will conduct services.

Mr. Niezgodski retired June 30, 1991, as the owner of Niezgodski & Sons Plumbing and Heating and was a 50-year member of the Plumbers and Pipe Fitters Union #172. He was a member of St. John the Baptist Parish; Holy Name Society of St. Hedwig Church; treasurer of the St. Joseph County Democratic Central Committee; a precinct committeeman, Precinct 217; West Side Civic and Democratic Club; Army-Navy Union #146; past president of the 1st District Democratic Club; St. Joseph Young Men's Society; Achievement Forum, where he served on the board of directors; was a past president and received the Achiever of the Year Award in 1992; and was formerly on the St. Joseph County Alcohol Beverage Board.

Mr. Niezgodski was also a member of the Polish-American Businessmen, where he served on the board of directors, served as a board member of Portage Manor, received the Keys to the City of South Bend and St. Joseph County, and was the recipient of the State of Indiana Sagamore of the Wabash Award on June 30, 1991. Mr. Niezgodski served in the Army during World War II in the 82nd Airborne Division, was a 50-year life member and past commander of the American Legion, Pulaski Post 357, and was a past 3rd. district commander, former 3rd. district American Legion baseball chairman, and was a member of the V.F.W. Golden Hill, Post 8748. He graduated from South Bend Central High school in 1943.
