Walter P. Niemann

Walter P. "Snubby" Niemann, 89, of St. Paul's Retirement Community, South Bend, Ind., formerly of South Scott Street, passed away at 6:40 p.m. Friday, Oct. 10, in St. Paul's Retirement Community.

Walt was born on Dec. 10, 1913, in South Bend, to Otto and Amilia (Bohne) Niemann. He was preceded in death by his parents, and by nine brothers and sisters. Walt retired in 1979 from the South Bend Community School Corporation where he had been employed for 22 years. Mr. Niemann was a member of the DFV German Club, IRAP, and the Breezers Club.

 

On June 24, 1939, in South Bend, he married the former Louise Gruber, who survives. He is also survived by two daughters, Sandra (Tom) Hinkle and Mary (Tim) Weber, both of South Bend; three sons, William (Donna) Niemann and Walter Niemann Jr., both of Edwardsburg, Mich., and Richard (Susan) Niemann of Bristol, Ind.; nine grandchildren, Joseph Niemann, Dr. T.J. Niemann, Janelle Stewart, Noret Flood, Kristie Sandor, Jeff Hinkle, Tom Hinkle Jr., Philip Weber and Scott Weber; and by 13 great-grandchildren.

 

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14, in Our Lady of Hungary Church. Burial will follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Osceola, Ind. Family and friends may call from 3:30 to 8 p.m. today, Oct. 13, in the Zahoran Funeral Home, 1826 S. Kemble Ave.
