SOUTH BEND - Our beloved son, Otis Lamount Nelson, was taken from our midst at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday, January 17, 2010, at Memorial Hospital. Otis, a resident of Generations Drive, South Bend, was the young age of 16 years. On June 7, 1993, in South Bend, life began for Otis when he was born to Leotis and Ollie (Lou) Nelson. Even though Otis had a short life, he was active and did many things. He was a sophomore at Clay High School where he assisted with exercising in gym. He also worked as a greeter at Wal Mart. Otis's hobby was sports, especially basketball, football and watching the Chicago Bulls and the Indianapolis Colts. He loved singing. Otis was a former member of Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church where he sang in the choir. He later was baptized at LeSea Ministries and was a member of New Horizons Outreach Ministries at the time of his death. Family members who survive to mourn his loss include his parents, Leotis and Ollie Nelson of South Bend; paternal grandparents, Elizabeth Whittaker of South Bend and Robert Nelson of Chicago, Illinois; an aunt, Caroline Troupe; uncles, Jimmy (Gwen) Troupe, Pal (Stephanie) Troupe and Jimmy Whittaker, all of South Bend, three great-aunts, Sarah (Richard) Alexander of South Bend, Geraldine Johnson and Everlean Robinson of Eudora, Arkansas; along with a host of cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by paternal step-grandfather, Robert Whittaker; paternal great- grandparents, Alberta and Richard Elliott; an aunt, Vanessa Whittaker; two great-aunts, Easter Williams and Mary Kickman; and a great-uncle, Willie Elliott. Funeral services for Otis Lamount Nelson will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, January 23, 2010, at New Horizons Outreach Ministries, with Apostle Dennis Given officiating. Interment will follow at Highland Cemetery. Friends may call in the church one hour prior to the services.
