Marie J. (Huston) Neland, 94, formerly of the Sedgewick House, Mishawaka, Ind., passed away at 2:07 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 17, in the St. Joseph Community Hospital, Mishawaka. Marie was born on Dec. 5, 1904, to the late Emma and Thomas Huston.

 

On July 4, 1939, as Marie J. Huston, she married Floyd A. Neland in South Bend, Ind. He died in 1960. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Clara Huston in 1980.

 

Marie is survived by a sister, Florence Watt of Mishawaka; a brother, John Huston of LaPorte, Ind.; two nieces, Mary Watt of Mishawaka, Mary M. Skube of Charlotte, N.C.; and by a nephew, John Huston, Jr., of Sidney, Australia.

 

Marie was a teacher at Mishawaka Battell, Mary Phillips and Hums Schools for over 40 years, mostly a first grade teacher. In 1968 she was named Mishawaka Woman of the Year. Marie was active in the St. Joseph Hospital Auxiliary, the American Red Cross, United Nations, and the American Association of University Women. She was a member of the Living with Arthritis Support Group, Tuesday Club, Library and Book Cart of St. Joseph Hospital, did volunteer teaching in the Mishawaka Schools, and was also the organizer of Mishawaka Friends of the Library. Marie served as president for the Fellowship Club, the Arthritis Society of St. Joseph County, Volunteer Service Bureau, the Arthritis Auxiliary, Delta Kappa Gamma Teachers Society, the American Association of Childhood Education, and Friends of the Library. She also served on the board of the Status of Women Commission, the Mishawaka Women's Club, Visiting Nurses and Beiger Heritage. Eighty years ago Marie had written many stories of Mishawaka, having a few published by our local newspaper. She also wrote a great deal of poetry.

 

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday in the Bubb Funeral Chapel North, 3910 North Main Street, Mishawaka. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday in the Bubb Funeral Chapel, with Fr. Edward Ruetz officiating. Burial will take place in the St. Joseph Memorial Park Cemetery, Granger, Ind.
