Harland W. Moore

March 4, 1922 - Nov. 21, 1999

Harland W. "Bill" Moore, 77, who resided at 422 Bruce Street, Niles, Mich., formerly of Edwardsburg, Mich., passed away at 10:37 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 21, at the home of his sister, Patricia Minnes of South Bend, Ind., where he had been staying during his illness.

Bill was born on March 4, 1922, in South Bend, the son of Harland H. and Bernice (Hutchinson) Moore, and attended the former Central High School. He entered the U.S. Navy on Dec. 1, 1943, and served until Jan. 30, 1946, as MOMM2/C.

He was married on Sept. 20, 1941, in South Bend, to the former Helen M. Flaherty, who died on April 7, 1993. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Tom Moore; and by a grandson, Benjamin Mortimer.

He is survived by two daughters, Kathleen Malling of Niles and Michele Barnhart of Pontotoc, Miss.; four grandchildren, Sherry Plomb and Trent Malling, both of Niles, Chris Plomb of Mishawaka, Ind., and Kelly Mortimer of Edwardsburg; three great-grandchildren; three sisters, Patricia Minnes and Margaret Freitag, both of South Bend, and Ida Flaherty of Peoria, Ariz.; and by a brother, Donald Moore of South Bend.

He was a member of Edwardsburg American Legion Post 365; St. Joseph Valley Masonic Lodge 45 of South Bend where he was a 50-year member; Saladin Shrine of Grand Rapids, Mich., being past president. He attended the Niles, Mich., Masonic Lodge. Bill formerly owned Four D Beverage Distribution of Dowagiac, and was formerly a mechanic with Hoffman Brothers Auto Electric of South Bend.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 26, in the Paul E. Mayhew Funeral Home, Edwardsburg. Cremation has taken place. Officiating will be Rev. Clarence Dycus, retired minister of Edwardsburg. Also officiating will be St. Joseph Valley Masonic Lodge 45, South Bend, at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Adamsville Cemetery, Edwardsburg, with Edwardsburg American Legion Post 365 having military graveside rites.

Friends are being received at the funeral home one hour before services.
