Sister M. Amata Miller CSC

SOUTH BEND - Sister M. Amata (Teresa Rose Miller) C.S.C., 88, was born in Kent, Ohio, to the late Ignatius Miller and Catherine Barta Miller. She is survived by her sister, Catherine Miller, and brother, John R. Miller, South Gate, CA. She is also survived by cousins, Rev. Robert F. Pfeiffer of Medina, OH, Rev. John L. Bitterman, SS, Menlo Park, CA, Doris (Randy) Sadler, Visalia, CA, Harriet (Bryan) Speegle, Irvin, CA, John F./Nancy Pfieffer and Jacob/Pat Pfeiffer of Cuyahoga Falls, OH, and Joseph/Maggie Pfeiffer and Gail (Edward) Pfeiffer of Stow, OH, Carol (Bill) Balcom of Muskegon, MI, Midge (Charles) Bachman of Salem, OR, M/M Derek Holland of Portland, OR, and Joan (George) Pfeiffer, Columbus, IN, Marge (Robert) Barta, Downey, CA, and many other friends.

Sister Amata received her early education at schools in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. Following a move to California with her family, she went to Webster Business College, Los Angeles, CA. Sister worked in the payroll and accounting offices of the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company in Los Angeles. She entered the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Cross in 1946, made her first profession in 1948 and final profession in 1951. Sister was assigned as a secretary, 1948, in the X-ray department of Holy Cross Hospital, Salt Lake City, UT. In 1952 she moved to Mount Carmel Hospital, Columbus, OH, as secretary in the X-ray department and also began training as an X-ray technician, and in 1954 was assigned to St. Agnes Hospital, Fresno, CA, as office manager and X-ray tech. Sister was appointed to the Provincial House as councilor and secretary/treasurer in Ogden, UT, Watsonville, CA, and the Regional House, San Jose, CA. Once her term of office was completed, she was secretary at St. Francis High School, Mountain View, for seven years, at Central Catholic High School, Modesto, and Notre Dame High School, Sherman Oaks, all in California. Health matters sent her to Saint Catherine by the Sea, Ventura, for a time, and then she went to Salinas, CA, to be support staff at Madonna Manor.

In 1999 she retired, officially, to Saint Mary's, Notre Dame, IN, where she was active in the Ministry of Prayer until her death.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Sisters of the Holy Cross Ministry with the Poor Fund, Saint Mary's, Notre Dame, IN 46556. Wake services will be at 4 p.m. Monday, Feb. 5, in the Church of Our Lady of Loretto, Saint Mary's, Notre Dame, IN. Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 6, in the Church of Our Lady of Loretto, Saint Mary's, Notre Dame, IN. The Kaniewski Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
