SOUTH BEND - Ruth Phyllis Miller, 84, of South Bend, died following an illness at 5:45 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 11, 2007, in St. Paul's Retirement Community. Mrs. Miller was born October 15, 1923, in South Bend, to the late William E. and Rena Belle (Grove) Borough, and was a lifetime area resident.

 

On July 22, 1945, in South Bend, as Ruth P. Borough, she married Warren B. Miller, who survives and would have celebrated their 62nd anniversary next July. They met at the Methodist Youth Fellowship Church Camp in Battle Ground, IN. Also surviving are two sons, David (Nancy Mayo-Miller) Miller of Kirkland, IN, and Don (Melody) Miller of South Bend; five grandchildren, Kimberly Gish, Adam and Lani Miller, Karin Ciesiolka and Kelly Atkinson; two great-grandchildren, Shyanne and Sierra Ciesiolka; a son-in-law, Thomas (Brenda) Edwards of Pine Bluff, AR; and a daughter-in-law, Anne (Ric) Watson of Mishawaka. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Beth Ann Edwards; a son, Alan D. Miller; a sister, Jeannette Gindelberger; and two brothers, Robert and Kenneth Borough.

 

She was a nurse in the early years of the South Bend Clinic. She was a very active member of Evangel Heights United Methodist Church where she was a member of the Chancel Choir, WSCS where she was president several times, played piano and organ and many times would accompany the choirs, and was very involved in many aspects of the life of the church. She also played the bass violin. She was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels and the Leighton Center SAGE group. She loved to quilt and made quilts for the American Cancer Society. The family would like to thank the nurses, assistants and the many residents of St. Paul's Retirement Community and Health Care Center for their care and concern through Ruth's illness. She was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother who dearly loved her family and will be greatly missed by all.

 

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 15th, in Evangel Heights United Methodist Church, with Rev. Patrick Somers officiating. Burial will follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Osceola. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. today, Nov. 14th, in the Welsheimer Family Funeral Home North, 17033 Cleveland Road.
