Al Lindahl, 75, Decatur, a former member of the Adams County Council and an educator, coach, and athletic official for many years, died at 5 a.m. Saturday in Lutheran Hospital at Fort Wayne.

He was born in Mishawaka on May 29, 1929, to Allison B. and Lucille F. Gleissner Lindahl.

He married Charlotte E. DeRue on August 1, 1953; she survives.

He retired in 1992 after 25 years as a teacher and a football coach at Bellmont High School. He had been a basketball coach from 1956-60 at the former Decatur Catholic High School and a football and basketball coach at McBride High School in St. Louis, Missouri from 1953-56. He also spent 42 years as an athletic official.

He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and was one of the founders of the annual St. Joe Smoker in Decatur in 1970, He was a member of the National Education Association, Indiana State Teachers' Association, Northeast Indiana Athletic Officials' Association, United States Track and Field organization, alumni organizations of St. Louis University and St. Joseph High School in South Bend, the Decatur Wrestling Club, and Elks Lodge 993 in Decatur.

He was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Decatur.

Other survivors are two daughters, Diane M. Lindahl of Three Rivers, Michigan, and Mrs. John (Mary C.) Friedt of Decatur; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A brother is deceased.

A prayer service will be held at 9:20 a.m. Wednesday in Haggard and Sefton Funeral Home, Decatur, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church. Burial will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Decatur.

Visiting hours are 4-8 p.m. Tuesday, with a rosary service at 3:30 p.m. and an Elks memorial service at 8 p.m.

Preferred memorials are to St. Joseph Catholic School in Decatur, the Cancer Fund within the Adams County Community Foundation, and/or the Elks Scholarship Fund.
