Robert L. Kingsafer, 72, of South Bend, Ind., passed away after an extended illness on Wednesday morning, Oct. 14, in his residence.

He was born in Dowagiac, Mich., on Aug. 18, 1926, to Ernest L. and Carrie L. (Jackson) Kingsafer, who both preceded him in death.

On Oct. 26, 1952, in Argos, Ind., he married the former Doris E. Bolinger, who survives.

He is also survived by two daughters, Linda Kingsafer of South Bend and Toni (Thomas) Herron of Sheridan, Ind.; and by four grandchildren, Willie, Justin, Christian and Benjamin Herron.

Robert retired in 1988 after 33 years service from the Englewood Electric Company in South Bend.

 

Mr. Kingsafer was a veteran of the U. S. Army in World War II, serving in the Phillipines Liberation.

He held membership in Post 624 Roseland, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 50, the 40 & 8, and was a member of the Indiana Sheriff's Association.

Mr. Kingsafer served his community in law enforcement in many different capacities. He was a St. Joseph County Special Deputy, 1946-1990; South Bend Civil Defense Police, 1957-1987; and served as park ranger for many years at the Clay Township Park; and was a charter member of the Clay Township Volunteer Fire Department. He also served as traffic controller of the Community Congregational Church where he was a member.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 17, in the Welsheimer Funeral Home, 521 N. William Street, and burial will follow in the Walnut Church Cemetery in Marshall County.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today in the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of St. Joseph County, to the Community Congregational Church or to the charity of donor's choice.
