SOUTH BEND - Elaine Shirley Kersten, 84, of South Bend, died at
5:40 a.m. Wednesday, June 2, 2010, in Regency Place of South
Bend. She was born October 22, 1925, in Milwaukee, WI, to the
late Norman and Ella (Tamms) Gumz, and had lived in South Bend
since 1957, coming from Seymour, IN. She is survived by two sons,
Glenn E. Kersten (Nancy) of Matteson, IL, and Mark Kersten
(Marleen) of Bully Valley, IL; and two grandchildren, Elisa and
Matthias Kersten. She was preceded in death by a sister, Joan
White, and brother, Philip Gumz. Elaine had been employed by
American Door, Tools and Services, and the South Bend Public
Library. She was a member of Order of Eastern Star for over 60
years and was member and past president of Pilot Club
International, South Bend. Music was her passion and she sang
with many choral groups including the Indiana University
Extension chorus. Her final years were spent at Regency Place of
South Bend where she acted as a resident advocate. Funeral
services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, June 12th, in the
Welsheimer Family Funeral Home North, 17033 Cleveland Road.
Cremation will take place at Welsheimer Crematory. Memorial
contributions may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
