SOUTH BEND - Deborah A. Keogh, 53, of South Bend, IN, passed away surrounded by her family at home on Saturday, December 19, 2009, following an illness. She was born on July 12, 1956, to the late James Anthony and Germaine (Huesman) Keogh in Anderson, IN, and had lived in South Bend since 1977, coming from Anderson. Along with her parents, her stepfather, Manuel Soto, also preceded her in death. Deb was employed by the University of Notre Dame since 1986 where she worked as a psychologist doing research, most recently at the Center for Children and Families. She was a practicing psychologist at Developmental and Behavioral Evaluation Services. She received her Ph.D in developmental psychology from the University of Notre Dame in 1986. On September 28, 1986, she married Samuel P. Saffren in South Bend, IN. She is survived by her loving husband, Sam of South Bend, IN; her siblings, Jim (Pat) Keogh of Anderson, IN, Sue (Marc) Miller of Richmond, IN, Mike (Keri) Keogh of Lexington, SC, Chris (Denise) Keogh of Anderson, IN, Jeanne (Mike) Brown of Anderson, IN; nieces and nephews, Tony Keogh, Meghan (Matt) Butler, Marcus Miller, Claire Miller, Mary Pat Keogh, Geoffrey Keogh, Jacqueline Brown and Heather Brown; and great-nephews, Clayton Keogh, Reid Butler and Owen Butler. Dr. Keogh was a member of the Notre Dame Alumni Club and was affiliated with the following: Adolescent Parenting Project at the University of Notre Dame; Society for Research in Child Development; American Psychological Association; Association of Applied Behavior Analysis; American Association of University Women; and the Humane Society of St. Joseph County. She was a past volunteer of the South Bend Community School Corporation Parenting Skills Program and Reins of Life for the Developmentally Disabled. Deb was an avid reader and loved to travel throughout the United States and abroad; enjoyed cooking, quilting, watching classic movies of the 1930s and 1940s, and exercising at Curves. She loved to work logic puzzles and collect miniature English cottages. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday, December 22, 2009, in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend, IN. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, December 23, 2009, in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, with Chaplain Steve Nani from The Center for Hospice and Palliative Care officiating. Entombment will follow at Cedar Grove Cemetery, Notre Dame, IN. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Northern Indiana Cancer Research Consortium, 707 E. Cedar Street, South Bend, IN 46617; or to The Center for Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc., 111 Sunnybrook Court, South Bend, IN 46637.
