Esther Katona

August 10, 1914 – May 15, 1998

 

Esther Katona, 83, of Maple Lane, South Bend, passed away at 1:10am on Friday, May 15, in the Fountainview Place Nursing Home.

 

Mrs. Katona was employed for many years at the Burger Dairy Store, and retired from Bike Web where she had worked for 13 years.

 

She was born on August 10, 1914, in South Bend, to Steve and Bertha Hornyak, who both preceded her in death.  She also was preceded in death by a daughter, Marie Katona, who died in 1949; and by two sons, Joseph Katona, Jr. who died in 1995, and Gerald Katona, who died in 1992.

 

On April 7, 1932, in South Bend, as Esther Hornyak, she married Joseph Katona, who survives.

 

She is also survived by a son, Jack (Sue) Katona of Granger; a daughter-in-law, Joyce Katona of Mishawaka; five grandchildren, Karyle Green-Pruitt, Joseph Katona III, Kori Guy, Kelli Katona and Kathie Agostino; eight great grandchildren; four sisters, Margaret Compton of Mishawaka, Frances Hojnacki, Freda Laiber and Julie Paksi, all of South Bend; and by three brothers, Louis Paksi, John Paksi and Julius Hornyak, all of South Bend.

 

Services will be conducted at 5pm on Sunday, May 17, in the Zahoran Funeral Home, 1826 S. Kemble.

 

Friends may call from 2 to 5pm on Sunday in the funeral home.  Cremation will follow, with burial in the Highland Cemetery.

 

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.
