Sister M. Dolora Geraghty CSC

Sister M. Dolora (Kathryn Grace Geraghty), CSC, 82, was born in Chicago, Ill., to the late Frank W. and Teresa McTigue Geraghty. She is survived by two sisters, Mary Geraghty, Chicago, and Dorothy Nugent, Chicago Heights; two brothers, Frank, Antioch, and Jerome (Lois), Orland Park; and two brothers-in-law, Joseph Gallagher, Oak Lawn, and Luke Kehoe, Des Plaines, all in Illinois. She is also survived by over 50 nieces and nephews, most of whom reside in the Chicago area.

                       

Sister Dolora received her early education at St. Theodore's school, Chicago, and St. Mary's Academy, Notre Dame, Ind. She received her bachelor of science degree in education from Saint Mary's College, Notre Dame, in 1962. She earned her master of arts degree in administration and education at DePaul University, Chicago, in 1968, and she received a registered social worker certificate in Illinois in 1981.

 

Sister Dolora entered the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Cross in 1940, made her first profession of vows in 1942, and final profession in 1945. Sister taught in elementary schools from 1941 to 1975, 10 years of which she was also the school principal. In Indiana she was assigned to schools in Notre Dame, Gary, Plymouth, Logansport, LaPorte, South Bend, Elkhart and Anderson. In Illinois she was assigned to schools in Chicago, Morris and Danville. In addition to teaching, she was also in administration in schools in Logansport, Anderson and South Bend. She served as a case worker with the St. Gregory Guild, Catholic Charities, Chicago, for four years. Then from 1979-2004 Sister Dolora was assigned to St. Mary's Parish, Niles, Mich., first serving as the social service coordinator, and then from 1980-2004 as the director of the Christian Service Organization. In early 2004, due to failing health, she was assigned to Saint Mary's Convent, Notre Dame, where she was active in the Ministry of Prayer until her death. Memorial contributions may be made to the Sisters of Holy Cross Ministry with the Poor Fund, Saint Mary's, Notre Dame, IN 46556.

 

Body will be received: Wednesday, Nov. 3, 4 p.m., Church of Our Lady of Loretto, Saint Mary's, Notre Dame. Wake Service: Wednesday, Nov. 3, 7 p.m., Church of Our Lady of Loretto, Saint Mary's. Funeral Service: Thursday, Nov. 4, 10:30 a.m., Church of Our Lady of Loretto, Saint Mary's. The Kaniewski Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
