SOUTH BEND - John R. Gartner Sr., 81, of Panama City, Florida, formerly of Mishawaka and South Bend, passed away Friday, January 22, 2010, in his home. John was born July 17, 1928, in Mishawaka, son of the late Ralph and Rose Gartner. John served in the U.S. Merchant Marines (now the U.S. Coast Guard). He was a retired real estate broker. John was preceded in death by his wife, Lois; and by a brother, Ralph Gartner Jr. John is survived by four children, his sisters, Mary Riefe and Rose Gordon, many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. in the Thallemer, Goethals & Wells Funeral Home, 503 West Third Street, Mishawaka. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Mishawaka. John's family will receive visitors on Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. in the funeral home.
