Mrs. Eva Gartner, City Pioneer, Dies

Death came to Mrs. Eva Catherine Gartner, age 87, pioneer resident of Mishawaka, Friday afternoon in the residence of her granddaughter, Miss Frances Gartner, 602 East Marion street.

She was born in Baden, Germany, April 2, 1843, and came to this city from her birthplace 76 years ago at the age of 11. As Miss Eva Eckstein, she was married to Joseph Gartner, now deceased, 38 years ago in Mishawaka.

Two daughters, Mrs. Clem Scheibelhut and Mrs. Albin Muinch, both reside in Mishawaka. Twenty grandchildren and 35 great-grandchildren survive.

The body may be viewed in the residence Saturday evening, and the funeral will be conducted at 9 o’clock Monday morning in St. Monica’s Roman Catholic church, the Rev. Anthony Badina in charge. Burial will be made in St. Joseph’s cemetery. Mrs. Gartner was a member of St. Monica’s Rosary society

Last rights for Mrs. Eva Catherine Gartner, age 87, pioneer resident of this city, who died in the home of her granddaughter, Miss Frances Gartner, 602 East Marion street Friday, were conducted this morning at 9 o’clock in the St. Monica’s Roman Catholic church, the Rev. Anthony Bodina [sic] in charge of the service. Burial was made in St. Joseph’s cemetery.

 

Editor’s Note: Eva Catherine Eckstein was the daughter of Johann Eckstein and Eva Catherine Greenwald (Gruenewald).
