Elizabeth Gartee

Elizabeth Gartee, 87, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, Nov. 16, in the Regency Nursing Home after a long illness. She was born in South Bend, Ind., on Nov. 12, 1915, to the late Agnes (Kuzmich) and Ferdinand Krizmanich.

 

She married Stanley "The Iceman" Gartee on May 18, 1933, in South Bend. He died March 26, 1990.

Elizabeth was an Avon representative for 40 years, and was the recipient of many awards.

She is survived by five children, Wally (Gayle) Gartee of South Bend, Cecilia (P.J.) Devoir of St. Joseph, Mich., Rose Marie (Bill) Wain of Elkhart, Ind., Mary (Dick) Was of South Bend and Elizabeth (John) Hedrick of Osceola, Ind.; 22 grandchildren, Rachel Wain, Valerie (Dave) Clingerman, Michael (Mary) Wain, John (Sheri) Hedrick, Kathy (Justin) Weddle, Nicole (Mike) Reynolds, Thomas (Stephanie) Hedrick, Stanley (Debbie) DeVoir, Roxanne (Jeff) Kezlarian, Philip DeVoir, Tim DeVoir, David DeVoir, Mary DeVoir, Jason (Carinne) DeVoir, Lisa (Mick) Leavitt, Renee (Dick) Pfaller, Richard (Trice) Was, Chris (Kyrstn) Was, Jennifer Was, Mike (Debbie) Gartee, Michelle (Jim) VanGoey and Shari (Bob) Haller; 40 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; three brothers, Fred Krizmanich, John (Virginia) Krizmanich and Herman (Betty) Krizmanich. She was preceded in death by a sister, Gizella Rupchock; and by three brothers, Stephen Krizmanich and Rev. Germain (Carl) Krizmanich; and by her great-grandson, Brock Hedrick. She was a parishioner at St. Joseph Catholic Church of South Bend, and was a member of the Altar and Rosary Society of that parish.

 

Friends called from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday in the HICKEY Funeral Home, 3516 E. Jefferson Blvd., where a wake service was at 7:30 p.m. Monday. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. today in St. Joseph Catholic Church, South Bend. Interment will follow at Highland Cemetery. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the Father Germain Krizmanich Soup Kitchen, 1615 Vern St., Cincinnati, OH 45202. We her grandchildren want to honor her for her simplicity of life and great capacity to love. Because of her love for the Lord and her family, we have learned to love better.
