Be ready when it comes

Doris Ellen Garner, 87, resided on South Bend Avenue, South Bend, Ind. GOD laid Doris to a peaceful rest at 7:10 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 8, in the Fountainview Nursing Home after a brief illness.

Doris was born March 28, 1914, to Lundy and Celestial Sawyer in Modoc, Ind. Doris was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Owen; and by her only child, Robert.

Mrs. Garner was a longtime member of the First AME Zion Church where she served on the choir and usher board.

She is survived by eight grandchildren, Teddy and Robert of Texas, Belinda of Los Angeles, Calif., Gregory of Elkhart, Ind., Robin, Karen, Katie and Kelly of South Bend; two sisters, Ruth (Ollie) Campbell of Muncie, Ind., and Roberta Jackson of South Bend; a devoted cousin, Madeline Smothers of South Bend; a daughter-in-law, Anita Garner of South Bend; a host of great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews; and by devoted friends, James and Marie Robinson.

Mrs. Garner was a 60-year member of the Odessa Chapter of Eastern Star #68 Chapter. She served as past Worthy Matron and also past Grand Worthy Matron.

Funeral services for Mrs. Garner will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Aug. 13, in the First AME Zion Church, 801 North Eddy Street, with the Rev. Timothy Rouse officiating. Friends may call one hour before services. Burial will follow funeral services at Chapel Hill Cemetery.

The Clark-O'Neal Funeral Home has been entrusted with funeral arrangements.
