Thayne Garberick

Jan. 27, 1937 - April 14, 2010
GRANGER - Thayne Garberick, 73, of Granger, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on April 14, 2010, after a six-month battle with cancer. He was born on January 27, 1937, to the late Elmer Elden Garberick and Juanita (Kentner) Garberick in Elkhart, IN. He grew up in Elkhart and graduated from Elkhart High School. He earned a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Tri State University in 1959. He married Judith Ann Mucci in her hometown of Ottawa, IL, on November 7, 1959. They were blessed with three children, Diane, Linda and Steven. Thayne served in the military at Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Aberdeen, Maryland, from 1959 to 1961. After his military service he and his wife and young daughter returned to Indiana to make a home in South Bend. Thayne earned his Professional Engineering License and was a member of ASHRAE and served as President of the St. Joseph Valley Chapter of Professional Engineers. He held multiple patents in his field. He enjoyed many years of success as the owner of T.K. Garberick, Inc., a mechanical contracting company. He was employed at H&G Services and had no immediate plans to retire. Thayne and his wife Judy loved to travel and visited all seven continents. They also enjoyed many family vacations including a recent Caribbean cruise with their children and grandchildren to celebrate their 50th Wedding Anniversary. One of his favorite vacation destinations was Maui, where he and his wife enjoyed spending many winters together. In addition to travel, Thayne loved playing tennis, watching basketball, working out, reading, whale watching, photography, and spending time with family and friends. At the age of 71 he and his wife went sky diving. He enjoyed it so much he talked about going again. He is survived by his loving family: wife, Judy, and daughters, Diane (Garberick) Ritchey and Linda (Garberick) Krathwohl of Granger. His beloved son Steven preceded him in death. Other surviving family includes his sons-in-law, Ray Ritchey and Matthew Krathwohl; and grandsons, Tyler Krathwohl and Noah Krathwohl, all of Granger; his sister, Wilda (Garberick) Pankratz, and brother-in-law, Marlin Pankratz of Mountain Lake, MN; and four nephews, three nieces, five great-nieces and one great-nephew. No funeral or memorial services will be held. The family asks that, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to Ray Bird Ministries, P.O. Box 3717, South Bend, IN 46619; or to Cornerstone Church, 52277 Hickory Road, Granger, IN 46530. Thayne Garberick was a devoted husband, father and grandfather and a loyal friend. He was a Christian man who set a good example for all who knew him. He will be greatly missed by those whose lives he touched. The Kaniewski Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
