SOUTH BEND - Arthur W. "Art" Frisk, 87,
went to be with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on November
24, 2007. Husband, dad, grandfather and best friend, Art was a
wonderful and extraordinary man who both loved and was loved.
Born September 29, 1920, in Hammond, Indiana, to Esther and Carl
Frisk, Art was the younger brother of Carl O. Frisk and E.
Victoria (Byrne) Frisk. Art graduated from Hammond High
School in 1939 and earned a BS degree in business administration
from Indiana University in 1943. In college he met his future
wife, Dorothy Jane Shimp of Muncie, Indiana. Frisker, as
he was called, was president of his fraternity, Kappa Sigma, and
a member of R.O.T.C., the wrestling team, the Sphinx Club, Blue
Key, Scabbard & Blade, Pershing Rifles and Delta Sigma Pi.
After college, Art answered the call of duty and enlisted in the
Army, training at Fort Benning, Georgia. As first lieutenant, he
bravely served in the Third Army in the European Theater,
including France, Germany and Czechoslovakia, and participated in
three battle campaigns.
Upon returning to the States in 1946, he
married his mate-for-life, Dottie, and embarked on his career.
Art came to South Bend in 1950 to study law at the University of
Notre Dame where he earned his bachelor of laws degree in 1952.
He was then recalled to active duty in 1952 to serve in the Judge
Advocate General's Office at Camp Atterbury, Indiana, during the
Korean War. Discharged in 1952 with the rank of captain, he
returned to South Bend to begin his law practice, where he also
founded South Bend Sash and Door Company in 1963. Art was awarded
the Bronze Star in 1977. He was elected chairman of the St.
Joseph County Republican Party and also served as City Attorney
for South Bend and St. Joseph County. He was awarded his Juris
Doctor from the University of Notre Dame in 1969. Dad (Bald
Eagle) participated in Indian Guides with his three sons and was
a member of the Rotary Club of South Bend. In 1988 Art was
awarded the Sagamore of the Wabash by Governor Robert D. Orr for
his leadership and many contributions to the State of Indiana. A
rt loved and was dearly loved by his
surviving wife of 61 years, Dottie; and children, G. Scott (Joan)
of South Bend, S. Gary (Kathleen) of Houston, Deborah J. Swider
of Milwaukee and R. Randall (Gina) of Indianapolis; and six
grandchildren, Anneke, Megan, Lauren, Nick and Michael, and
newest grandchild, five-month-old Jackson. He is also survived by
his niece, Marcia Ulan, and a nephew, Terry Frisk of
Hammond. Dad was dedicated to his family and a counselor to
countless numbers of clients and friends. His sense of humor and
wit endeared him to all. Always putting the needs of others
before himself, his presence will be deeply missed.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m.
today, Nov. 27, in the Welsheimer Family Funeral Home, 521 N.
William St., with Rev. James Miller officiating. Burial will
follow at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park. Friends may call in
the funeral home from noon until the time of services at 3:00
p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart
Association, to the Salvation Army, to First Presbyterian Church,
or to the Sunnyside Presbyterian Church.
