George Joseph Friedman

Feb. 19, 1941 - May 9, 1999

George Joseph Friedman, 58, died following a long illness on Sunday, May 9. The son of Edith I. Burket and Carl H. Friedman, he was born Feb. 19, 1941, in Mishawaka, Ind. He graduated from Mishawaka High School in 1959. George received his bachelor's degree in industrial arts in 1965 and his master's degree in education in 1969 from Indiana State University. A 30-year instructor with the South Bend Community School Corporation, he taught drafting and Automated Computer Aided Design and led co-op programs. He retired in 1997 from John Adams High School. He coached football at LaVille Junior/Senior High School of Lakeville, Ind., and track at Washington Clay High School. He also taught at Ivy Technological College of South Bend. George was longtime member of St. Joseph Church of Mishawaka and St. Mary Church of Niles, Mich. An avid woodworker and builder, he constructed several homes during summer recesses. Other hobbies included dancing, drawing and painting.

 

George was preceded in death by his father in 1983 and by his mother in 1993. He is loved and remembered by his two children, Nancy K. Friedman of Niles, and Eric J. Friedman of Lansing, Mich.; three sisters, Kathleen (James) Hatfield of Tarpen Springs, Fla., Phyllis (Lawrence) Pittroff of Riverside, Calif., and Donna (Robert) Donovan of Orange, Calif.; two brothers, Kurt L. (Carolyn) Friedman of Mishawaka, and Martin ''Marty'' (Sandi) Friedman of Elk, Wash.; and by many nieces, nephews, and cousins. His memory is also cherished by his devoted partner, Vicki Friedman of Mishawaka.

 

Visitation is planned from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today at Thallemer-Goethals Funeral Home, 503 W. Third St., Mishawaka, with a wake service held at 3 p.m. A Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday at St. Monica Church, 222 W. Mishawaka Ave. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger, Ind.
