Rev. (Bernard) Patrick Foley, C.S.C., 80, died Wednesday, November 1, 2006, in Holy Cross House, Notre Dame, IN. Father Foley was born to Bernard and Winnifred Foley on March 24, 1926, in Anaconda, MT. He attended St. Paul Grade School and graduated from Anaconda High School in 1944. He was drafted into the Army and spent time in the Philippines and in Japan. Upon discharge from the Army, Fr. Foley attended Carroll College in Helena from 1946-49 studying pre-med. He then joined the Congregation of Holy Cross. On August 15, 1949, he entered Sacred Heart Novitiate, South Bend, and made first vows on July 16, 1950. Fr. Foley returned to Notre Dame and graduated in 1952. That summer he moved to Holy Cross College in Washington, D.C., for the study of theology. He was ordained on May 19, 1956, in the Cathedral of Helena, MT.

 

His first assignment was to teach at Notre Dame High School for Boys in Niles, IL. In 1963 he began a 12-year hitch as a chaplain in the Armed Forces, serving on many posts around the world.

After his military service he served a year at St. Elizabeth Parish in Portland, OR, and then a year at Holy Cross Parish in South Bend. Beginning in 1977 and ending in 1986 he served in Chile at St. George's College and at Cristo Nuestro Parish. Returning to the States and Notre Dame, he assisted on campus from 1986 to 1987 before working at St. Stephen Parish in South Bend for one year.

 

From 1988 to 1998 he was chaplain to the Holy Cross Brothers in San Antonio, TX, and taught math at Holy Cross High School. He also assisted as chaplain at the San Antonio State Hospital. He spent one year at Dolores Parish in Austin before returning to San Antonio in 1999. In 2004 he moved to Holy Cross House, Notre Dame. Fr. Foley was preceded in death by his parents, Bernard and Winnifred Foley, and three brothers. He is survived by a sister, Anne Fryberger, and several nieces and nephews.

 

Viewing for Fr. Foley will be held in the chapel of Moreau Seminary, University of Notre Dame, on Sunday, November 5th, from 3:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., with a wake service at 7:30 p.m. The funeral Mass will be celebrated in Sacred Heart Basilica, Notre Dame, on Monday, November 6, at 3:30 p.m. Kaniewski Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
