Rev. John A. Devers CSC, 82, a priest for more than 48 years, died Tuesday in Holy Cross House at Notre Dame, one day after his 83rd birthday. He was associated with the University of Notre Dame from 1915 to 1929 and later served as chaplain of several institutions operated by the Brothers of Holy Cross. Born Nov. 4, 1880 in Hazelton, Pa., he entered the Holy Cross Seminary on the Notre Dame campus in 1903. He received the religious habit in 1909 and made his final profession of vows on Sept. 22, 1912. He was ordained to the priesthood on June 25, 1915 in Sacred Heart Church at Notre Dame.

 

From 1929 to 1949 he was chaplain at Sacred Heart College in Watertown, Wis. During this period he also served parishioners at St. Joseph Church in Richwood, Wis. In later years he was chaplain at Cathedral High School in Indianapolis from 1949 to 1952; Columba Hall at Notre Dame from 1952 to 1953; Reitz High School in Evansville from 1953 to 1954; Nazareth College in Nazareth, Mich. from 1954 to 1956; and St. Joseph Farm in Granger from 1956 to 1957. Since 1957 he has been living in retirement.

 

Friends may call at Corby Hall Chapel on the campus. The Office of the Dead will be recited at 5 p.m. today at Sacred Heart Church, where the requiem mass will be at 8:30 a.m. Thursday, with burial in the Notre Dame Community Cemetery.
