SOUTH BEND - Carol Marjorie Sumrall-Detwiler, 62, residing in South Bend, passed into the loving arms of Jesus on Monday, May 31, 2010, following a brief battle with cancer. She was born January 4, 1948, in London, Ontario, Canada, a daughter of Leonard and Margarette (Hord) Thirsk, and had lived in South Bend since 1970, coming from Canada. She was a graduate of Lake Michigan College and was a registered nurse, having worked at The Sanctuary at St. Paul's and more recently at Holy Cross House at the University of Notre Dame caring for the retired priests. For many years she was an active member and pastor's wife at Christian Center in South Bend. She and her husband Frank served in Southeast Asia as missionaries in the early 1970s. In December 2000, she was united in marriage to Michael Detwiler, who passed away in April 2004. In more recent years, she found great pleasure and satisfaction in caring for the priests at Notre Dame, and quickly became a close friend to many. She is survived by a daughter, Amber (Joseph) Yoho of Mishawaka; a son, Lester L. (Sarah) Sumrall of South Bend; two grandchildren, Zoe Sumrall, age 7, and Judah Sumrall, age 6. Also surviving are her mother and stepfather, Margarette and Nicholas Tomen of Chatam, Ontario; two sisters, Judith (Paul) Gingrich of Walkerton, Ontario, Kathy Thirsk of London, Ontario; and a brother, Robert (Heather) Thirsk of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. She was preceded in death by her father, Leonard Thirsk. Services celebrating the life of Carol Sumrall-Detwiler will be at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, June 3rd, in Christ Chapel, 3402 Locust Road, South Bend. Rev. Stephen Sumrall will officiate. Graveside services and burial will follow at Southlawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. today in the Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel, 3718 South Michigan Street, South Bend, and one hour prior to services Thursday in the church.
