Walter J. Derda

January 27, 1898 - December 25, 1974

Walter J. Derda, 76, of 441 S. Kaley, died at 11:30pm Wednesday in his home after a brief illness.  Derda was a retired owner of the Brass Rail Tavern.

Born on January 27, 1898, in Kolo, Poland, he had lived here 64 years, coming from Kolo.  On January 25, 1920, he married Mary Slomski, who died in 1963.  On October 3, 1964, he married Cecelia Jozwiak Nycz, who survives.  Also surviving are two sons, Stanley and Ervin G., both of South Bend; a stepson, Stanley Nycz of South Bend; three daughters, Mrs. Dorothy Heald of Ann Arbor MI, Mrs. Eleanor MacGregor of Livermore CA and Mrs. Dorothy Dorsey of South Bend; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Alice DeVolder of Kalamazoo; 17 grandchildren; two step grandchildren; three brothers, Adam, Joseph and Anthony, all of South Bend, and two sisters, Mrs. Bernice Mejcher and Mrs. Ann Janiszewski, both of South Bend.

Services will be at 10am Monday in St Adalbert's Catholic Church.  Rev Eugene J. Kasmerczak, pastor, will officiate.  Burial will be in the St Joseph Cemetery. 

Friends may call from 7 to 9pm Saturday and 10am to 9pm Sunday in the St Jospeh Funeral Home where a wake service will be at 7:30pm Saturday.  Derda was a member of Pulaski Post 357, American Legion and Lodge 1437, Polish National Alliance.

Friends may call from 7 to 9pm today and 10am to 9pm Sunday in the St Joseph Funeral Home where a wake service will be held at 7:30pm today and a rosary will be recited at 7:30pm Sunday.  Among the survivors are two daughters, Mrs. Rita Dorsey of South Bend and Mrs. Dorothy Heald of Ann Arbor MI.
