Sister Mary Paula Casey CSC

1836 – Nov. 30, 1927

South Bend Tribune 12/1/1927

Sister Mary Paula CSC, 91, for 69 years a prominent figure in the progress of St. Mary’s College and the University of Notre Dame, and was one of the last survivors of Mother Angela’s civil war little band of mercy, died Wednesday afternoon in St. Mary’s Convent. Although retired for about 10 years, she remained active in the life of the community. She was born in 1836 as Wififred Casey, and entered the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Cross in 1858, three years before the civil war broke out, when she joined with the little band for the battlefields. Following the war she became active in the progressive programs of St. Mary’s and Notre Dame. Sister Mary de Sales CSC, 90, is the only member of the civil war band that survive.
