SOUTH BEND - Hazelton W. Carstens, 86, of South Bend, IN, passed away at 10:00 p.m. Saturday, October 17, 2009, in Memorial Hospital. Hazelton was born on August 6, 1923, in Port Clinton, OH, to William and Myrtle (Walker) Carstens, and had lived in South Bend for over 60 years. He retired from the former Werntz Hardware in South Bend. He had also been employed with the former Studebaker Corporation. On July 2, 1948, in South Bend, he married Catherine L. Filacy, who survives. Also surviving are his children, Robin Carstens of South Bend, IN, Larry Carstens of Blaine, MN, and Chris (Nancy Shen) Carstens of South Bend, IN; five grandchildren, Christine Carstens, Corey (Lorissa) Carstens, Nicholas Carstens, Eleanor Pijut and Marilyn (Gary) Baker; two great-grandchildren, Stephen and Amy; and one sister, Vanda Wahlers of Port Clinton, OH. He was preceded in death by his grandson, Daniel Pijut; one daughter-in-law, Barbara Carstens; three sisters, Virgie Baer, Arteth McFarline and Anna Davis; and one brother, Robert Whickline. Funeral services will be held at 7:00 p.m. Thursday in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive. Friends may call from 6:00 until 7:00 p.m. Thursday in the Kaniewski Funeral Home. Hazelton was a W.W. II Army veteran and a lifelong member of V.F.W. Post #360. He was also a Boy Scout Master at Troop #439. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association .
