Kyle J. Carson, 20, of Old Ridge Road, South Bend, Ind., died around 3 a.m. on Sunday, Jan. 18, following an automobile accident on U.S. 421 near Francesville, Ind. Kyle was a junior at Valparaiso Uni-versity where he majored in civil engineering. He was born on June 28, 1977, in Lafayette, Ind., and had lived in South Bend since 1983, coming from Logansport.

 

Kyle is survived by his parents, Kathy (Hutchings) and Scott A. Carson, with whom he lived; a sister, Kelly M. Carson and a brother, Gavin M. Carson, both at home; his maternal grandparents, Jeanette and Clarence ''Red'' Hutchings of South Bend; and by his paternal grandmother, Dora Carson of Edwardsburg, Mich.

 

Kyle was a 1995 graduate of Riley High School where he played center on the football team, was named First Team Academic All-State for football, participated with the marching band, was a cheerleader, participated in freshman baseball, was a member of the Future Problem Solvers and the National Honor Society. He also found time to work for Martin's Supermarket in the Erskine Plaza. At Valparaiso, he was president of the Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity, was captain of the cheerleading squad, was a member of the Student Advisory Committee for Electronic Information Services, was an active member of the Valparaiso University Student Chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers, and had recently completed an Engineering Co-Op with the Indiana Department of Transportation where he served as an engineer. His career goals were to receive his bachelor's decree in civil engineering, pursue a law degree and work in the field of Construction Law.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday in the Welsheimer Funeral Home, 521 N. William Street, South Bend. Burial will follow in the Southlawn Cemetery, South Bend. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today in the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Kyle Carson Memorial Fund, C/O any Teachers Credit Union location.
