David E. Carpenter

SOUTH BEND - David E. Carpenter, 85, of East Monroe, South Bend died early Friday, Aug. 28, 1998 in Memorial Hospital after an extended illness. Mr. Carpenter was born on May 8, 1913 in Saint Paul, Minnesota to Harry R. and Elizabeth (Benner) Carpenter who preceded him in death. Also preceding him is his son, John P. Carpenter. A lifelong area resident of South Bend, Mr. Carpenter was the owner and operator of a kitchen cabinet business called Carpenter Enterprises and was a manufacturer's representative for Wood-Mode Cabinets.

 

Survivors include his three daughters, Nancy J. Horvath of Mishawaka, Suzanne Rickey and Kay C. Carpenter both of South Bend, two sons, David E. Carpenter of South Bend and Ken C. Carpenter of Bradenton, Florida. Two stepdaughters, Gail L. Hendrix of South Bend and Vicki S. Williams of Walkerton, IN. Seven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and five step-grandchildren. Also surviving is a cousin, Anna Louise Culp of South Bend.

 

Mr. Carpenter was a lifetime member of the Masons, a certified kitchen designer and a member of the Indiana Chapter of the A.I.K.D.; a member of the Builders Association, a member of the American Legion; an Eagle Scout and was a W.W.II veteran in the Navy. He also was a musician and played the banjo and the organ and enjoyed playing for his family and friends.

 

Friends may call Monday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the Hickey Funeral Homes, 3516 East Jefferson Blvd. South Bend, IN. Services will be Tuesday, September 1, 1998 at 1:00 p.m. in the funeral home with Rev. Adolph Lacy of the First General Baptist Church officiating. Private burial services will be at a later date in the Highland Cemetery in South Bend, IN. Memorial contributions may be made on behalf of Mr. Carpenter to the American Lung Association or to Hospice of Saint Joseph County South Bend, Indiana.
