SOUTH BEND - Bernice A. Carney, 92, of South Bend, died at
9:20 a.m. Friday, November 23, 2007, in St. Paul's Retirement
Community, following an illness. Mrs. Carney was born May 6,
2007, in Chicago, IL, to the late Axel S. and Olive M. (Soderberg)
Tengblad. She lived in South Bend and Lake of the Woods,
Bremen, IN, for the last 60 years.
On July 11, 1936, in Chicago, she married
William L. Carney, who preceded her in death on November 19,
1972. She was also preceded in death by a son, William L. Carney
III, in 1973, and a brother, Malcolm Tengblad. She is survived by
two daughters, Sharon Balboa of Henderson, NV, and Maureen
K. (Jon) Hruska of South Bend; a son, Ralph M. (Caroline)
Carney of Corralitos, CA; eight grandchildren, Sean (Sue) Carney,
Brian (Peg) Carney, Matthew (Diane) Carney, Dawn (Peter) Lanser,
Zachary Balboa, Jennifer (Mark) Cantrell, Jon (Christy) Hruska,
and Corinne (David) Koppel; and 15 great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Carney retired as an executive
secretary to the president of Bremen Bearings after ten years.
She also was a co-owner, with her husband, of Middle West Traffic
Service for 20 years. She was a member and very active with
American Turners of South Bend and was a volunteer at Memorial
Hospital. She was also a former member of Ridgedale Presbyterian
Church and more recently of First Presbyterian Church, both of
South Bend.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday,
November 25, in the Welsheimer Family Funeral Home, 521 N.
William St., with Rev. Don Neely of First Presbyterian Church
officiating. Cremation will take place at Welsheimer Crematory.
The family will receive friends in the funeral home one hour
prior to the time of the service. Memorial contributions may be
