Patricia M. Carmichael, 85, of Clare, Mich., formerly of Mishawaka, Ind., passed away on Sunday, Feb. 11, in her home. Mrs. Carmichael was born on Sep. 7, 1915, in St. Joseph, Mich., as the daughter of the late Rock I. and Elizabeth (Cooney) Lynd. On Aug. 30, 1938. in Hillsdale, Mich., she married William L. Carmichael, who preceded her in death on July 29, 1993, after 54 years of marriage. She was also preceded in death by three sisters, Margaret Fulgenzi, Miriam O'Connell and Joanne Herbst. Mrs. Carmichael is survived by one daughter, Lynda (Tom) Brown of Clare; two sons, Thomas F. (Merry) Carmichael of Columbus, Ind., and Marc L. (Wilma) Carmichael of Lockport, Ill.; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; one sister, Eleanor Allen of Commerce Township, Mich.; and one brother, John Lynd of Union Lake, Mich.

 

 

Mrs. Carmichael moved to South Bend, Ind., in 1946, coming from Terre Haute, Ind. She earned her bachelor's degree from Nazareth College and a master's degree from Indiana University. Mrs. Carmichael was a teacher in the South Bend Community School Corporation. She taught at Twin Branch School in Mishawaka and Harrison School in South Bend for many years. She was also the Title I administrator and developed and directed the Migrant Summer Programs for the South Bend School Corporation. She retired in 1978 after 25 years of service. Mrs. Carmichael was a deacon of the First Presbyterian Church, Mishawaka. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, the National Retired Teacher's Association, A.A.R.P., the Professional Educators Organization, the Mishawaka Garden Club, and the Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. She also continued to volunteer in the classroom after her retirement.

 

Friends may call on Thursday, Feb. 15, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 P.M. in the Hahn Funeral Home, 505 W. 8th Street, Mishawaka. Funeral services will be held on Friday, Feb. 16, at 11 A.M. in Sunnyside Presbyterian Church, South Bend, with one hour of visitation prior to services in the church. Rev. Robyn McMullen will be officiating. Entombment will follow at Riverview Cemetery Mausoleum, South Bend. In memory of Mrs. Carmichael, contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 425 N.
