MISHAWAKA - Albert "Al" Cannoot, 93, died Monday, February 22nd, in Hospice House after a three-week illness in the hospital. He was born on March 21, 1916. He lived in Mishawaka his entire life. Albert married the former Elizabeth (Betty) Van Hoyweghen on November 23, 1935. She died in 1992. They had three children who survive. They include a daughter, Janice Cerri of Mishawaka, and two sons, Kenneth (Blythe) and Gerald (Christine), both of Mishawaka. Also surviving is Albert's sister, Irene Fortier of Interval, New Hampshire. An infant daughter, Sharon, preceded Albert in death as did his parents, Agnes and Cyril Cannoot, and his stepmother, Amelia (Millie). Additional survivors include five grandchildren, Arlene Heck, Steven Cannoot, David (Irene) Cannoot, Andrew Cannoot and Kevin (Brooke) Cannoot; five great-grandchildren, Casey, Michael, Kristen, Gaia and Uma. Albert graduated from Mishawaka High School in 1933 where he was proud of the fact that he played on the football team. In his later years he would entertain family and friends with stories of his playing days at MHS as well as his games as a member of the semi-pro BK teams. He was a staunch Notre Dame football fan which "rubbed off" on his two sons. At the age of 30, Albert served in the Army during WWII and was assigned stateside supply work until the end of the war. He retired from Bendix Energy Controls Division in 1977 after 36 years of employment. He was a past member of the Bendix Senior Management Club. Al was also a member of the BK Club and DeAmicis Clubs in Mishawaka, where he enjoyed the companionship of fellow club members, especially in his later years. He joined the Good Fellow's Club (probably one of the oldest and longest members), as well as the local Elks and Eagles. Fishing, bowling and gardening proved to be his most dominant leisure-time activities. Hahn Funeral Home, 505 W. 8th Street, Mishawaka, is handling the arrangements. Due to Albert's wishes, he will be cremated. There will be no viewing but friends may visit with the family from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, February 28, in the funeral home. Services will take place at St. Bavo Catholic Church on Monday, March 1st, at 10:00 a.m., with Rev. Barry England officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital , P.O. Box 111, Dept. 142, Memphis, TN 38148-0142; or to The Center for Hospice and Palliative Care, 111 Sunnybrook Court, South Bend, IN 46637.
