SOUTH BEND — Clemence N. Butts, 82, of 4248 Wimbleton Court, formerly of Carmel, Ind., died at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 26, in the Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center, where he had been a patient since Feb. 22nd. He was born on April 29, 1918, in Jobs, Ohio, the son of Winfield and Mary Elizabeth (Davis) Butts. He was preceded in death by his parents, and by four brothers, Melvin, Frederick, Joseph and Clyde.

He married Doris Evans on July 15, 1939, in Columbus, Ohio. She survives with one son, Charles Stephen (Rosita Dalmas) Butts of Kaneohe, Hawaii; three daughters, Mrs. Russell (Joyce) Leatherman of Indianapolis, Ind., Mrs. Jack (Nancy) Cole of Viola, Ark., and Mrs. John (Karen) Renner of Mishawaka, Ind.; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Mr. Butts served in the Navy as a medic on the USS Quincy during World War II. He sold auto parts, was sales manager for Christianity Today magazine, was a past president of Accurate Products in Indianapolis, Ind., and was past vice president of Curtis Industries in Cleveland, Ohio. He was a member of the Watercolor Society of Indiana, and his painting, Empty Tomb, was displayed in the Billy Graham Art Exhibit in Chicago. He was a part of the Walnut Grove Chapel family in Indianapolis.

Friends called from 4:30 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday in the Rieth-Rohrer-Ehret-Lienhart Funeral Home in Wakarusa, Ind., where services will be held at 10 a.m. today. Pastor David Harper of the Bible Baptist Church, Wakarusa, will officiate. Burial will be at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens, Indianapolis, with military services.
