Rev. John J. Burke CSC, 53, steward and a councilor of the Holy Cross Fathers Indian Province, and former vice president of the University of Notre Dame, died early today in the student infirmary on the Notre Dame campus. He was vice president in charge of business affairs at Notre Dame from 1946 to 1951. Before that he served as a member of the Economics Department faculty and Prefect of Discipline at the university. He was born in Montreal, Canada Dec. 28, 1903. He entered the novitiate of the Congregation of Holy Cross in 1927 and enrolled in the University of Notre Dame in 1928. He graduated in 1932 and was ordained to the priesthood in Sacred Heart Church on the campus in 1936. He received a masters degree from Catholic University of America, Washington DC in 1937. In 1951 he was granted a two-year leave of absence from his post as vice president for reasons of health. He lived in Phoenix, Ariz. for two years, returning to the campus in 1953. From 1944 to 1946 he was a chaplain in the US Navy.

 

The Office of the Dead will be recited at 5 p.m. Sunday in Sacred Heart Church. The wake will begin at 5 p.m. today in Corby Hall Chapel. A requiem mass will be in the church at 8:30 a.m. Monday, with burial with military honors in the Community Cemetery at Notre Dame.
