B. Elizabeth Berger, 89, of Lincoln Way West, Mishawaka, Ind., loving mother and grandmother, passed away at 11:35 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 2, in her home. Mrs. Berger was born on Aug. 15, 1910, in Rochester, Minn., as the daughter of the late George B. and Bertha (Detwiler) Storey.

 

On May 13, 1944, as the former B. Elizabeth Storey, she married Kenneth C. Berger in Natches, Miss. He preceded her in death after 39 years of loving marriage on July 5, 1983. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, George and John Storey; and by a sister, Marietta Church. Elizabeth is survived by a daughter, Janice (Ritchie) Hanefeld of South Bend, Ind.; a granddaughter, Joanne (Brian) Schemahorn of Dowagiac, Mich.; and by a sister, Esther Fiol of Quarryville, Pa.

 

Mrs. Berger was a 1942 graduate of Iowa State University. From there she enlisted in the U.S. Army where she achieved the rank of captain while proudly serving her country during World War II. She had been a resident of Mishawaka since 1945, coming from Texas. Mrs. Berger was very proud of her faithful and dedicated 50-year membership to the First Presbyterian Church, Mishawaka. She was also a member of the Mishawaka Women's Club, the Mishawaka Garden Club, and was a member of P.E.O. Sisterhood Chapter N. She retired as a dietitian supervisor for the South Bend Community schools in 1977 after 20 years of service.

 

A celebration of Elizabeth's life and faith will be held at 2 p.m. today, Feb. 4, in the First Presbyterian Church, Mishawaka, with the Rev. Ronald Miller officiating. Burial will follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Osceola, Ind. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the First Presbyterian Church, 401 Lincoln Way East, Mishawaka, IN 46544. The family received friends from 3 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 3, in the Hahn Funeral Home, 505 W. 8th Street, Mishawaka. The family will also be receiving friends from one hour prior to services at the church today.
