Edward Beitler

Edward Beitler, 77, of Brick Road, Granger, Ind., died at 7:38 p.m. on Thursday, May 11, in Memorial Hos-pital, South Bend. Mr. Beitler was born on Nov. 8, 1922, to Elizabeth (Winkel) and Julius Beitler, both of whom preceded him in death. Mr. Beitler was also preceded in death by a son, John Conard on Aug. 31, 1978, and by eight brothers and sisters.

 

On July 1, 1950, in South Bend, Ind., he married Norma (Copper) Conard, who survives. He is also survived by a son, Ronald Conard of Muskegon, Mich.; a daughter-in-law, Betty Conard of Prior Lake, Minn.; and by two grandchildren, Edward Conard of Marina Del Rey, Calif., and Julie Conard of Prior Lake.

 

Mr. Beitler retired from the South Bend Community School Corporation's maintenance department. Prior to that he had worked at the Studebaker Corporation. He was a graduate of Washington High School and had played football under Coach Bernie Witucki. He was a member of Little Flower Catholic Church, D.A.V. Chapter 6, and the Leighton Center. He was an Army veteran of both World War II, where he served in the Pacific, and the Korean Conflict, where he was wounded and received the Purple Heart. Mr. Beitler was quite proud of his military service to his country. Mr. Beitler was an avid bowler and bowled in the senior leagues at the Chippewa Bowl in South Bend. He was an avid sports fan and a big fan of Bobby Knight. Most importantly, Mr. Beitler adored and loved being with his grandchildren.

 

Services and visitation for Mr. Beitler will be private, which was the wish of Mr. Beitler. Burial will be in St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger. The Welsheimer Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial contributions be made to St. Casimir Catholic Church, 1308 West Dunham, South Bend, IN 46619; or to St. Jude's Children Hospital, P.O. Box 1000, Dept. 300, Memphis, TN 38148.
