Samuel E. Austin, Jr.

April 22, 1939 - October 20, 1999

Mr. Samuel E. Austin, Jr., loving husband, father, grandfather, son and brother, 60, heard the voice of Jesus say, "Come unto me and rest," and with his family at his side, he crossed over to rest in the presence of the Lord.

He was born to the union of Samuel and Vernator Austin, Sr., on April 22, 1939, in Altheimer, Arkansas. Coming from Altheimer in 1944, he moved to South Bend. He was united in holy matrimony to Clara Chism in South Bend, Indiana, on August 12, 1962.

For the past 13 years he was employed by the Whirlpool Corporation. Prior to working for Whirlpool, he was employed by Murphy Motor Freight for over 15 years.

At age five, Sam became a member of the Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church and served on the Usher board as a faithful member for many years and the scholarship committee of the church. He received the baptism of the Holy Spirit at Faith Apostolic Church on September 26, 1999.

Mr. Austin leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife, Clara Austin; two daughters, Dana Renee (Craig) Austin Marsh and Darla Kristi Austin, both of South Bend; a son, Samuel Dion Austin, III of South Bend; a grandson, Darrius Quintel Austin of South Bend; his mother, Vernator Austin of South Bend; five sisters, Geraldine Cheaton, Barbara Ann (Percy) Jones and Debra Faye (Richard) Jennings, all of South Bend, Estella Burrell of Dayton, Ohio, and Betty Berry of Los Angeles, California; two brothers, George Geno Austin of Atlanta, Georgia, and William (Janathan) Austin of Grand Rapids, Michigan; a brother-in-law, Carl Taylor; a god daughter, April Brown; special family friends, Victor Brown, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Gammage, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Baker, and Billy Carter; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and family friends.

Samuel served as an uncle extraordinaire to each of his 23 nieces and nephews and 24 great nieces and nephews, never failing to give each one quality time.

He was preceded in death by his father, Samuel Austin, Sr.; and a sister, Vernator Austin Taylor.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 23, 1999, at 12:00 p.m. in the Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church, with burial following at Riverview Cemetery.  Friends and family called on Friday, October 22, 1999, in Alford's Mortuary.
