John A. Armstrong

John A. Armstrong, 75, of Polk City, Fla., formerly of Portage Road, South Bend, Ind., passed away on Friday, March 1, in his residence. He was born March 19, 1926, in Troy, Mich., to the late John Arthur and Helen Marie (Barklow) Armstrong.

 

On Feb. 23, 1974, in South Bend, he married Mable I. Smith, who survives. He is also survived by children, Joyce Humphrey of South Bend, Helen (Keith) York of Buchanan, Mich., Wanda (Thomas) Walczewski of Edwardsburg, Mich., Diana L. Armstrong of Polk City, John A. Armstrong III of Cassopolis, Mich., Michael L. (Sandy) Armstrong of Fort Wayne, Ind., and Michael H. Armstrong of Niles, Mich.; stepdaughter, Dru A. (Dave) Woodward of Sun Valley, Calif.; stepson, William W. (Christine) Woodward of Dyersburg, Tenn.; 19 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; a sister, Helen Jones of Sylvan Lake, Mich.; and by a brother, James (Effie) Armstrong of Troy.

 

Mr. Armstrong was retired from the United States Navy as an electrician's mate first class, and worked for Wheelhorse in South Bend for 10 years, retiring in 1989. While in the Navy he served in World War II and Korea. He was a life member of American Legion Post #8, the Family Motor Coach Association and AARP.

 

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 12, in the Welsheimer Funeral Home, 521 N. William Street. Burial with military honors by American Legion Post #50 will be held at the Highland Cemetery. Friends may call in the funeral from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, March 11, 2002.
