OSCEOLA - Lester D. "Red" Armold, 87, of Osceola, passed away of natural causes in his residence on Saturday, August 2, 2008. Red was born February 3, 1921, in Jasper County, Indiana, to the late Guy and Stella (Alson) Armold. On June 7, 1973, he was united in marriage with the former Ms. Elizabeth "Betty" Whisman in Mishawaka. His wife Betty survives along with his children, Marcy (Jerry) Klotz of Mishawaka, Steve (Mary Ellen) Armold of West Springfield, Massachusetts, and Jonathan Armold of Knox; as well as his stepchildren, William Whitfield of LaCarne, Ohio, Bill (June) Modlin of Niles, Michigan, Ted (Beth) Modlin of Granger, Richard Modlin of Elkhart and LuAnne (Dupree) Pitts of LaCarne, Ohio. Red is also survived by his sister, Dorothy Campbell of Logansport, Indiana, many grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. Preceding him in death were his first wife, Bonnie (East) Armold; his second wife, Betty (Newton) Armold; a daughter, Tami Armold Lanier; a stepson, Jimmy Modlin; and a brother-in-law, Gene Campbell.

 

Visitation will be held 2 hours prior to the 6:00 p.m. funeral service on Wednesday, August 6, in Chapel Hill Funeral Home, Osceola, Indiana. Cremation will take place and interment will follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. Red served his country during WW II, enlisting in 1942 until his honorable discharge in 1945. During his time of service, Red was in Europe and was a medical technician. He was employed as an insurance salesman for Western and Southern Insurance Company and was the owner of the Shamrock Café in Mishawaka for many years. He enjoyed playing pool, managing softball teams, bargain hunting, and visiting with his old friends. He also belonged to the VFW, American Legion and Club 15 in Mishawaka. Red was a wonderful husband, loving father, grandfather and brother. He will be greatly missed by his family and many friends. Memorial contributions may be made to the Southern Care Hospice or to the Armold family.
