The South Bend Times of, Tuesday October 27, 1896 describes the 2nd Anniversary Banquet of the Polish Turnverein held at the Kosciusko Hall on South Bend’s west side. There was a large gathering of members and affair was opened by the remarks of Mr. Leonard Kalamajski who called upon Mr. E. Z. Brodowski of Chicago, President of the Polish Alliance of America who was acting chairman of the event.

In 1903 this group becomes the “Rocky of South Bend” by winning the National Turnverein Competition in New York City.  In the attached article note the very, young picture of George W. J. Kalczynski, President of the South Bend group.

Mr. Kalczynski will become noted in South Bend Polonia as the Editor of the Polish Messenger (Goniec Polski)

“The delegations from the New York Clubs considered it Preposterous that a delegation from the “Wild and Wooly West” should capture all the plums”
