He was born Abt. 1829 in Brzostek, Jaslo, Poland. She married (2) KACPER SLISZ1 January 26, 1853 in Brzostek, Jaslo, Poland, son of SEBASTIANA SLISZ and EVA GRABIEC. He was born January 06, 1806 in Kolaczyce, Jaslo, Poland2, and died Bef. 1875 in Kolaczyce, Jaslo, Poland. Notes for KACPER SLISZ: There are no death records for the church at Kolaczyce from 1862 to 1906. The marriage record for Antoni and Marya Stec mentions that he was dead in 1879. Since Kacper's last known child was born in 1868, he died in that 10 year window. Notes for JOANNA SLISZ: Sr. Victoria of SSMI Toronto CN 2003 **************************************** It seems to me that the Sisters writing the Chronicle are all referring to the same person because of the surname. These are the only instances this surname is used. Because the Sisters were not fluent in English, they may have "translated" her baptismal name into English -- however, it is noteworthy that when the Sister writes re her death she uses her correct name "Joanna". Also they refer to her consistently as being over a hundred! I e-mailed you before I had found the reference to her actual death in the Chronicle. Because she was "mortally" ill in 1953 -- at 104, I (mistakenly) assumed she must have died! So I e-mailed you. But I searched further and this led me to October 05, 1955 -- that date of her death. Again, the death certificate would verify this. If she received an "Old Age" pension from the federal government -- and she likely did -- then your can perhaps get a record of this from the website of the Government of Canada. I will try to e-mail this site to you. Re her burial -- likely it was in the cemetery of the Ukr. Catholic Church in Komarno. The current pastor is Rev. Peter Chorney, 14 Balsam Bay, Winnipeg, MB, R2G 1J7. Tel (204) 237-1300. Sept. 16, 1940: Miss Youliasha "Joanna" Slish (Slisz) , Bishop Nykyta’s housekeeper for 16 years, came to reside in our home. She had been staying with Maydanyk’s. April 19, 1941: On Holy Saturday the lights for chapel that Youliasha Slish (Slisz) had funded arrived. She rejoiced that they came in time for Easter. In gratitude we offered a Divine Liturgy for God’s Blessing upon her on April 23 may the Lord accept her sacrifice of love and reward her in the Heavenly Kingdom. Feb. 15, 1953: Mrs. Evhasia Slisz has been seriously ill for the paast several months. Dr. Goodwin, our physician, visits her frequently, and has told us that she has cancer in two places. She is 104 years old and has no close relatives. Feb. 17, 1953: Evhasia became “mortally” ill. She recieved the “last rites the Last Anointing. Oct. 05, 1955: Joanna Sliz died. She was with us 15 years. For three years she was bed-ridden, unable to get up. She was very pious, prayed much and received the Eucharist frequently. The Requiem services were celebrated by Father Volodymyr Luchkiw. The Sisters sang the responses. She lived 105 years. From her death certificate we know she was a resident of Canada for 43 years (1912) and was the housekeeper at St Basils home for at least 15 years(1940). Her estate was left to the SSMI order at St Basils and was probated in South Bend IN 2-25-1957. I suspect her estate was the bequest of her brother Anton my Great Grand Father who's date of death and burial remain a mystery. Notes for ANTONI JACOB SLISZ: [Piech~52.ftw] The Passport has Aton going to Austria in 1915 and Ellis Island records show that he returned with his third wife 35 year old Anna Unknown Oral History from Phyllis and Elise Slisz: Aton was married twice the first one died in Austria he then marries his wife's unmarried sister as was the custom in those days ...The sister and Casper did not get along and so when Casper was 8 years old he was shipped off to the states with his dad Aton and stayed with someone in Pittsburgh. Aton was a colorful Guy. He was a self taught Herbalist and bone healer. He traveled about doing this type of thing. He came from what was called in those days in Austria "Little Poland " the land of the dark haired and eyed peoples. Our research that he was born and baptised at St. Ann's in KoIaczyce, near Jaslo at that time Austrian Poland or Galicia... We still do not know where Anton or Annie are buried. The more we dig up the bigger the mystery becomes. In Cedar Grove Cemetery in South Bend we have the graves Marya Stec listed as "First Wife of Anton Slisz" and of Balbina Laskowski as "Second Wife of Anton Slisz". Our research has determined that Marya and Balbina were twin sisters born March 10, 1857 at Kolaczyce. Anton and Mary had a son that was born in Pittsburgh, PA who passed at 16 of Consumption, Then Balbina died of TB, followed by their daughter Frances. TB seemed to run rampant in this family. There are about 8500 Polish citizens who bear the name as of 1990 and it is more prominent in the southern part of the country. Notes for KASPER VICTER SLISZ: [Piech~52.ftw] Oral History from Evelyn Slisz Piechorowski: Granma talks about how Casper had difficulty showing affection (could be because of being abandoned by the second wife and Father) but the kidscould get him to do most anything when he had the money by soft soaping/coplimenting him (Did'nt Get That from his father) ....HE LOVED THROUGH THINGS AND ACTIONS.... Oral History from James Piechorowski: I remembered when I was very little he made me a "BAG full of Wooden Blocks" and Carried me on his Shoulders ..He was a BIG 6 ft plus man and with his dark hair and bushy eyebrows he was scary...he intimidated me but I never sensed that he would hurt me .... He taught Dad (Frank A. Piechorowski) how to hunt and fish (in those days for food not sport).... Casper worked at WHITE FARM (Oliver Corporation) for 25 years...so did my dad (35 yrs) and I worked there one summer!!! We all worked for a time ...on the same Machine "A HOT HAMMER" and I mean the same one ... this was the one that the Die flew out and hit Granpa (Frank A.) in the knee in 1938/39 which started his knee problem ....when I worked on it every "FIVE HITS...You had to take a sledge hammer and beat the Die Keys in or it would come out and hit you."
