MARTIN TOLER TOLIVER TAELLE TOELLE

Posted by Judith Murphy <[email protected]> on Sat, 7 Mar 1998, at 1:40 a.m.

Seeking info on MARTIN family:

Clyde Martin & Sally TOLER (? spelling - might be TOELLE or TOLIVER) had 2 children, Doris, b Mar 24, 1914 Palmyra, Harrison Co, IN (she married William HERMAN), and Justin Toler (?spell) MARTIN, b Jul 14, 1916 Princeton, Gibson Co, IN. Said they lived Scott Co, IN at one time too.

Clyde was b Oct 20, 1887 Nabb, IN and d Jul 31, 1943? but place of death is unknown. Said Clyde's parents were T. J. Martin & Anna. Nothing else is known and I am trying to find info on them as well as Clyde and his wife.

Sally (TOLER / TOLIVER / TAELLE / TOELLE ) was supposed to have been born May 30, 1892 Lewisport, Hancock Co, KY to James M. and Betty E. (___) TOLER? It was said that either Sally or Clyde was supposed to have come from a town called Evington in Davis Co, KY but I can't even find Evington.

Do any of these things sound like your MARTIN persons?

MINER, ESTELL/ESTIL

Posted by Joe Miner <[email protected]> on Mon, 23 Feb 1998, at 7:42 p.m.

I have traced my great grandfather to Scottsburg, prior to and after the Civil War. He was in Company F 66 regiment of the Indiana Volenteers. He died on 7 April 1897 in a veterans home in Ohio. His wife my Great Grandmother was still living in Scottsburg as of November of 1902. I have also found a letter from my Grandfaters sister a Mrs Katie Ridlen sent from Scottsburg in 1937. Her husbands name was Warren Ridlen. I have also found records where my Grandfather paid a maintenance fee to the Scottsburg Cemetery Association thru 1947. I suspect he paid until his death in 1950. I am looking any data on my ancestry. My great grandmother was Mary Estell/Estil I have found records useing both spellings. Her brother was Hugh Estil according to a news paper cliping from 1898. He was mentioned in Katies letter.

Posted by Tom Kephart <[email protected]> on Tue, 24 Feb 1998, at 8:26 a.m., in response to Miner-Estell/Estil, posted by Joe Miner on Mon, 23 Feb 1998, at 7:42 p.m.

There is an Estil Cemetery in Vienna Twp, Scott Co (T7E, R3N, northeast corner of Section 33). There are a few of my wife's ancestors buried there, but I have never visited it. It's about a mile north of another historic cemetery, the Hopewell Cemetery, just east of Vienna, IN, where there are quite a few of my wife's ancestors (MURPHY, McCULLOUGH). I plan to visit the Estil Cemetery this May on our annual trip to Scottsburg. I have no connections between my wife's line and the ESTIL/ESTILL family at present, but the proximity to each other makes the possible, if not likely.

Listed in the 1978 Cemetery Book published by the Scott Co. Historical Society are the following:

ESTILL, William, consort of Catherine, d. 8-28-1876 age 65 yrs. 6 days

ESTILL, Catherine, w. of Wm., d. 4-17-1873 age 59 yrs.

ESTILL, John H., s. of Wm. & C., b. 3-15-1842 d. 8-12-1868

ESTILL, Elizabeth, dau. of R.B. & M.A., d. 12-7-1873 age 10 mo. 17 days

ESTILL, Isaac, b. 10-29-1791 d. 10-29-1837

ESTILL, Margaret Ann, dau. of Wm. & C., b. 1-9-1835 d. 11-6-1852

ESTILL, Sarah J., dau. of Wm. & C., b. 7-25-1846 d. 11-3-1846

I don't have the next page of this book (p. 34). I have a photocopy of that page only because there are three EVERITTs listed (that's my wife's family). The same source states that the cemetery is "on land which was originally purchased from the Government by Isaac Estill on June 23, 1820." Also: "Isaac Estill came to Scott County (where he settled was then part of Clark County) from Fleming County, Kentucky, in the spring of 1813." There was also reportedly a church connected to the cemetery, possibly Methodist, but it was abandoned long ago.

The "Scott County Marriages" book lists a marriage between ESTILL, Mary E. and MINOR, Charles B. on 7 Aug 1856.

The 66th Ind. Volunteers were organized by Roger Martin, commandant of Camp Noble near New Albany, IN, where the 66th convened. When Kirby Smith invaded Kentucky, the 66th, along with several other regiments, had to march there before being fully organized. They were under the temporary command of Maj. Gen. Lew Wallace, who was home on leave. Later, DeWitt Anthony and Roger Martin served as Colonel of the 66th. I have a brief summary of their actions; if you are interested, e-mail me. I don't have the captain's name for Co. F, but my wife's MURPHY and McCULLOUGH ancestors also served in the 66th, Co. K.

Dear Andy,

While researching my ancestors, I found a Christina SULLIVAN, b.18 Sept. 1844 d. 29 Nov. 1882 married a Josiah H. MONROE. They had one child that I'm aware of; Cora MONROE b. 11 March 1874 d. 18 Sept 1895. The SULLIVAN family was from Washington County, but had close ties to Scott County. Perhaps these people are related to your MONROE's. Best of luck.

Jan, I'm sorry to say I have very little information except that Melvina Clark Keepers died 11/23/1908 in Madison Co at the age of 64. My grandfather (Melvina was his grandmother) always told me we were related to George Rogers Clark. I found that part of your message particularly interesting. Perhaps we are after the same family information. I will let you know if I find out anything of further interest to the Clark lineage.

Joseph Broady and Jane Dent had at least 3 daughters...Jane, Phebe and Mary. The girls all married into the Collings family. Mary died in May of 1863 in IL. Jane was 40 when she died in 1839 (the daughter) Phebe was born 1794 and died in IL. All this leads me to believe that indeed he could have served (Joseph) during the Revolution. Have you tried seeing if the National Archives has any records of him? This family ties into lines that were associated with the Mormon movement in IL and then out west. How about an LDS Family History Center? The Hunsacker line is very well researched and the Broady lines tie in I believe.
