INDIANA ORPHAN TRAIN PROJECT

In the 1859 time frame, a train arrived in Hamilton County carrying orphans from the New York area to the western rural area. This train dropped off 27 orphans that day in Hamilton County. It was while I was researching one of these orphans that I became interested in the story of the Orphan Trains. I found later that I am related to Hamilton Co. Orphan Train Rider Seth Workmen by marriage. Those 27 orphans were part of the 200,000 children from New York and Boston area that were sent west between 1853 and 1930. A large number of these children ended up in Indiana.

This project is dedicated to identifying the largest number of the children left in Indiana. It is also dedicated to posting this information on the Internet and putting on file with the National Orphan Trains Project

I need your help in identifying any of these children. If you have any information on the orphans who were given out in the counties of Indiana,

Please include NAME, COUNTY, NAME OF FAMILY CHILD GIVEN TO, AGE, DATE ARRIVED, MARRIAGE, CHILDREN AND DEATH INFO and any other information you have on occupations, war service etc. would also be welcome and send to SHARON A. CRAIG
