REMARK: Aaron Hart was a significant owner of land that now comprises the town of Schererville. At the time of his accidental death on January 12, 1883, Mr. Hart owned 17,000 acres located mostly in St. John Township.

REMARK: The town of Dyer took its name from Martha Dyer Hart's maiden name.
 

TITLE: Michael Grimmer. Born July 18, 1852, in Turkey Creek, Indiana, and died 1926 in Crown Point.

REMARK: In 1883, Michael Grimmer and his half-brother, Peter F. Reder, opened a general merchandise store in the building that later became known as the Gard Store. Michael Grimmer was Trustee of St. John Township for eight years, Lake County Auditor from 1896 to 1904, and served two sessions in the Indiana State Legislature as a representative of Lake County. Michael Grimmer and his wife, Helena Neuman Grimmer, are buried in St. Michael's Cemetery in Schererville.

REMARK: Sarino Swets was considered the first farmer in the area to make a living through truck farming. Mr. Swets "was one of Lake County's staunch Republican who had achieved a state-wide reputation in politics, and his resemblance to Abe Lincoln is physique was astonishing."
