REMARK: In 1883, Michael Grimmer and his half-brother, Peter F. Reder,
opened a general merchandise store in the building that later became known
as the Gard Store. Michael Grimmer was Trustee of St. John Township for
eight years, Lake County Auditor from 1896 to 1904, and served two sessions
in the Indiana State Legislature as a representative of Lake County. Michael
Grimmer and his wife, Helena Neuman Grimmer, are buried in St. Michael's
Cemetery in Schererville.
