DATE: circa 1909
PUBLISHER: Nelson
POSTMARK: none
COLLECTION: S. Shook
REMARK: Written on reverse in pencil: "Crew that built bridge over Kankakee
R. at Dunn's Bridge, Indiana stayed here." Burrows Camp was situated in Porter County, directly north of Dunn's
Bridge. It was here that Mr. and Mrs. Burrow operated a pleasure resort
consisting of a theatre, which was later converted into a dance hall, and a
horse-drawn merry-go-round. Just north of Burrows Camp was a saloon, while
directly east of of Burrows Camp was a combination store and residence. The
dance hall and store/residence structures were later destroyed by separate
fires.

TITLE: Dredge on the Kankakee, Burrows Camp
DATE: 1909
PUBLISHER: Nelson
POSTMARK: August 9, 1909, Wheatfield, Indiana
COLLECTION: S. Shook
REMARK: In 1902, the Kankakee Reclamation Company was organized to deepen,
widen, and straighten the Kankakee River. After several court battles, the
company was finally granted permission to dredge the river in 1911, and
commenced dredging in 1914. The straightening of the river shortened a
stretch of 45 miles flowing through the counties of LaPorte and Starke to 17
miles. At the time of straightening, the river was renamed "Marble-Powers
Ditch," a name that was very rarely used after dredging and used even more
seldom today. The floating dredges themselves consisted of living quarters
for about eight men and a kitchen.

REMARK: The following text was written on the reverse by George C. Green to

hold the keys make decree otherwise, then let us turn from the river to the
hills. The sunlight lingers there, and ---?--- notes travel o'er the hill
top have no fear."
