Pullman-Standard Employees Project

Did you know that Pullman-Standard made more than passenger train cars?

Pullman-Standard played a leading role as an arsenal during WW I and WW II. It produced freight cars, tanks, and munitions for America's war efforts during both World Wars.

Thousands of employees from Northwest Indiana and Chicago contributed to the success of Pullman-Standard at their Hammond, Michigan City, and Chicago locations. Since employees routinely transferred within the Pullman-Standard plants located in Indiana and Illinois, information on a particular employee may be scattered between sources in Indiana and in Illinois.

The South Suburban Historical and Genealogical Society located in East Hazel Crest, Illinois, has information on Pullman-Standard employees who worked at the Chicago plants.

Members of the Northwest Indiana Genealogical Society are compiling an index of employee names from the original personnel cards (housed at Indiana University Northwest's Calumet Regional Archives) from the Indiana locations. Although the records are not complete from the Michigan City plant for the entire period from 1912 to the 1970's, there may be information that will assist you with finding key details of a family member. The Hammond Pullman plant was merged with the Haskell Barker Company of Michigan City in 1922.

Please contact Martha Latko if you are interested in learning more about the project and/or volunteering to assist with data entering and proofing.

Below is employee information that is currently available. More surnames are forthcoming as the information is transcribed by volunteers.
