These were the1869 boundaries for North Township, Lake County, Indiana:

• Northern border: Lake Michigan
• Eastern border: Porter County
• Southern border: Little Calumet River (Ranges 7W, 8W), Township Line 36N (Ranges 9W, 10W)
• Western border: Illinois state line

Present day Calumet Township was not created until after 1880.

A township plat map is organized according to the meridian lines and shows all lands in that township. The 110 maps in this book are of EACH individual section in North Township, showing the ownership of the property, location of lakes, rivers, existing towns, railroads and a road (Old Ridge Road).

We copied those original maps, using them to create an every-name index. We included a typed copy of the original handwritten index. Note that some names were missing in the original index and some legal descriptions were incorrect.

Genealogists should find this book helpful in determining properties that their ancestors owned and may locate other family members or relatives on adjoining parcels, as the early settlers tended to live near their families and friends for mutual support. Historians will find this book useful in locating geographical and man-made features as they appeared in 1869.

The original deeds for these lands are housed at the Lake County Government Center in the Office of the Recorder physically located at 2293 North Main Street, Crown Point, Indiana 46307. The original book is in the Calumet Regional Archives at Indiana University Northwest, 3400 Broadway, Gary, Iindiana 46408-1197.
