County Research Resources
The County of Madison was chartered on January 4, 1823. Pendleton was the original county seat; however, Andersontown became the county seat in 1827 because of its more centralized location. It was not until 1828 when official business was transacted in the County. Adjoining counties include Grant on the North; Tipton and Hamilton on the West; Delaware and Henry on the East; and, Hancock on the South. The County contains about 450 square miles, being nearly 30 miles long from North to South and 15 miles wide. Our County recognizes James Madison, the Fourth President of the United States of America, for whom it was named. The old Court House burned in December of 1880, causing a great loss of records; however, the deed records escaped the fire, having been housed in a different building at the time. The Court House pictured above was demolished in the early 1970's.
