ABOUT THIS DATA: Everyone has heard the tale of the 'Courthouse Fire', no matter where they are researching, and Madison County, IN, is, unfortunately, no different. All the divorce records existing before Dec. 10, 1880 were destroyed by various fires, but thanks to the efforts of Haroldyne Zook, a compilation was made from the Madison County, IN newspapers that are on microfilm in the area libraries. While all the records are probably not available, the ones that could be found are listed to help researchers.
The legal notices to which the page numbers refer may be viewed by visiting the Indiana Room in the Anderson Public Library. You may also e-mail, write or phone the Indiana Room and request information about the articles, furnishing the Staff with the name, page and date and they will oblige you with a look-up as soon as possible. Be advised that these notices consist of small ads giving notice of the divorce filing, granting, judgment or dismissal. There is no further information available, except perhaps the name of the county clerk or the lawyer or other official filing the case. The Staff at the Indiana Room will not be able to give you any details about the divorces or children, etc. as none of this is listed.
The data contained in this table was extracted from the compilation entitled "Divorces, Madison County, Indiana, 1849-1880, compiled by Haroldyne Schultz Zook, 20 April,1987", which was used with her permission. The style and manner in which the data appears on this website is ©2003 by Nan Spier.
