Malone, Jacob Walter - was born
November 1, 1861, in Tuscarawas County OH, and came to LaGrange County
when he was nine years old. He spent practically all his life in and
near Shipshewana. He was of a quiet disposition, never intruding, never
boisterous, never complaining, a good friend, a good father, a good
neighbor and a good citizen. To those who knew him best it seems that
his manner of death was a fitting end to his quiet life, and to these
we add may he rest in God and peace on his soul. He leaves to mourn a
wife, two sons, Gilbert H. and Marion R., four brothers and three
sisters, other relatives and host of friends. He was fifty-nine years,
six months and nine days. Leaves have their time to fall, and
flowers to wither at the north wind's breath, and stars to set,
but
Thou has all seasons for thine own, O Death. Day hath mortal
cares, the banquet has its hour. Spring comes not unawares, But
death, Death slips in unseen and takes the choicest flower. 1922 -

McCally, Charles A.
– “C.A. McCally Died Fighting Brush Fire On Bloomfield Farm” “Expired Soon After Being Found By Neighbor On
Old Session Place” “Was County Treasurer” “Scores Paid Tribute To Their
Friend
At Funeral Tuesday” - Scores of friends gathered Tuesday afternoon
in
LaGrange at the late house of Charles Albert McCally, former County
Treasurer,
Town Clerk and member of the Town Council, as a last tribute to their
friend of
years. Mr. McCally's death last Saturday afternoon, May 8,
1926,came as
the result of a sudden apoplectic stoke suffered while he was fighting
a small
grass fire on his farm in Bloomfield township. No one knows just
what happened,
as he was alone at the time, but earlier in the afternoon a neighbor,
passing,
saw him engaged in watching the burning of old grass in the fence
rows.
About 4 o'clock his body, with the breath of life still fluttering, was
found
by Charles Ely in a field on the old Ormand Session place, just north
of the
McCally farm, and near the road bed of the old railroad. Shortly
before
the discovery Mr. Ely and his brother William noticed smoke rising from
among
the trees close to the old Session buildings. Fearful that a
grass fire
had gotten too close, Charles Ely drove the 3/4 mile distance and found
his
suspicions well grounded. Suddenly he came upon Mr. McCally lying
in the
grass, seemingly yet alive. Making him as comfortable as
possible, Mr.
Ely raced back to his home to the west for help. On returning in
a few
minutes with his brother they found Mr. McCally had passed away.
The body
was brought to Caton Brothers undertaking and then taken to the home on
East Michigan St.
where the daughter, Edna, who has been teaching in the Ft.
Wayne schools, and the son,
Ross I.
McCally, a member of the staff of Purdue University
soon arrived
in response to the sad news. Charles
Albert McCally was born in LaGrange
County on the farm in Bloomfield
Township, near
where his last moment came
30 June 1858, the son of Samuel and Elizabeth (Richard) McCally.
His
father, who died in 1913, came to this country in 1854. In
1886 he
was married to Emma LaRue, who died in November of 1920. To them
two
children were born, Edna and Ross. He served as treasurer of LaGrange County for 2 terms, taking
office first
in 1894. He acted as Clerk of the Town Land Board 4 years and for
another
term of 4 years was a member of the Board. He and his family
moved to
LaGrange in 1909. Mr. McCally also held the office of Sec. of the
Farmer's Rescue for many years. Besides his son and daughter he
is
survived by 2 sisters, Mrs. William W. Minich, of south of Plato, and
Mrs.
Truman Fair, living north of the old McCally farm, a brother John
McCally of
Sturgis and Almond McCally of near Shipshewana, and many nephews,
nieces and
other relatives, a sister, Mrs. Sarah Rogers, and 2 half brothers,
Andrew
McCally and Elias G. McCally, preceded him in death. - Contributed to

McCally, John Nichols
- “JOHN McCALLY ENDS LIFE BY HANGING SELF” - John McCally, 77, a
Sturgis
resident for 25 years, was found dead, his limp body lying behind an
iron
bedstead in his home, 403 Sturgis Ave., at Ten A.M. Sunday morning,
March 20,
1927. A rope doubled about his neck told a mute story of the
manner of
his death. In a literal sense McCally did not hang himself - he
strangled
himself to death. This was the verdict of a coroner's jury at an
inquest
held at 1 o'clock yesterday afternoon in the court of C.L. Haner,
justice and
acting coroner. There was no sign of violence in the room nor
about the house. Two persons testified at the inquest. They
were
A.M. Neufler and John Turnbul. Both declared that McCally was in
good
spirits when they saw him last. "Mr. McCally appeared to be all
right when I visited him Saturday evening." Mr. Turnbul
testified,
"Although he had been worrying for some time over $800 which he said he
had lent." John McCally was born in
Auglarze county, Ohio,
July 14, 1850. He came to Sturgis 25 years ago. He was a
former
employee of the Wilhelm Furniture Company here. During recent months,
he had
been employed at intervals as an extra flagman here for the New York
Central Railroad. Funeral services will be held
Tuesday at 1 o'clock at the Moon Funeral Home in Sturgis and at 2
o'clock at
the Methodist Church
in Plato, Indiana.
The body will be interred in the Plato cemetery at the side of his wife
who
died 40 years ago. Surviving are two sons Sam S., of
Kendallville, Ind.,
and Charles of Akron, O; one daughter Mrs. Jacob Bolley, of
Kendallville; two
brothers, Albert of Shipshewana, Ind., and Richard, of Goshen;
and two
sisters, Mrs. William Minnick, of LaGrange and Mrs. Roxey Fair, of
Howe. -

McCally,
Samuel - “SAMUEL M'CALLY, PIONEER, IS DEAD”
& “He came to LaGrange County in 1854,
Fifty-nine Years Ago - Funeral Held Yesterday” – “His Death Came In His
Eighty-Sixth Year” Samuel McCally who
came to LaGrange county in 1854, died Monday, April 28, 1913, at the
home of
his daughter, Mrs. William W. Minich, East of town, in his eighty-sixth
year. Funeral services were held yesterday morning at ten o'clock
from
the Methodist Episcopal Church at Plato, with Leroy W. Kemper, the
pastor, in
charge. Burial was made at the Plato church yard. Mr.
McCally was born August 3, 1827, in Ohio,
in a house on the line dividing Clark and Madison counties. His
parents were Nicholas and Nancy Judy (Tschudy) McCally, the former a
Virginian
and the latter a Kentuckian. Nicholas McCally served in the War
of 1812,
first in the cavalry, in the Green Clay brigade under General Hull, and
was one
of the army surrender to the British. He afterward re-enlisted
under
General Harrison and was wounded in an engagement with the
Indians. His
death occurred October 30, 1850 in Logan County, Ohio.
Samuel McCally attended the country schools and at eighteen years of
age began
work on a farm in Clark County,
Ohio. This
employment he
followed for three years and for three more years he was engaged in
driving
cattle to New York.
He became the owner of the old homestead in Ohio the year following the death of
his
father, but in 1854 came to the county and invested in 180 acres of
land.
He was first married in 1849 to Mary A. Nicholson. She died in
1856, leaving him four children, John McCally, now at Sturgis,
Almond
McCally, of Clay Twp., Andrew McCally of Kalamazoo and Elias G.
McCally,
who in 1865 was accidentally killed. His second marriage was to
Elizabeth
J. Richards, who was the mother of five children, former county
treasurer
Charles A. McCally, Mrs. Sara Roger of Springfield Twp., Mrs. William
W.
Minich, Manley McCally of Goshen and Mrs. Truman Fair of this
township.
Since the death of his second wife Mr. McCally had made his home with
his
children. Mr. McCally was both a man of character and
capacity. He
was successful as a farmer and active and prominent in political and
other public affairs. He belonged
to that race of men to whom LaGrange County
is indebted for
its transformation from a wilderness. Strong, rugged and
resourceful, he
made his life count for things worth living. And at last he fell
asleep,
in the fullness of time, passing on to that country from, which none
returns. -

McConnell, Dr. James -
deceased -- Among the men who took an active and prominent part in the
early history of Steuben County few are more worthy of mention than Dr.
James McConnell. He was born in Morefield, Va., Sept. 17, 1810,
and was the second in the family of James and Elizabeth
McConnell. He received his education at Lovingston, New Glasgow
and New London, Va., under his father's watchful care, and soon after
entered the office of Dr. Lamb, of Brownsville, Fayette Co., Pa.,
completing his medical studies with Dr. Porter, formerly Professor of
Anatomy in Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia. He began
practice at Brownsville, Pa., and about 1833 moved to McConnellsville,
Ohio, and in May, 1835, came to Lima, Lagrange Co., Ind. The
territory of which Steuben County, Ind., now consists was then a part
of Lagrange County, and it will thus be seen that he was identified
with Steuben County from the very commencement of his career in
Indiana. He remained at Lima until Nov. 1, 1836, when he moved to
the "Vermont settlement," now Orland, where he continued the extensive
practice he had enjoyed in Lima. He was the first physician of
Steuben County, and a man of fine education and undoubted
ability. In April, 1837, he was elected Clerk and Recorder of
Steuben County for the term of seven years, and located his office in
the log cabin of John Stayner, on Jackson Prairie, removing to Angola
in the fall of 1837, where the county-seat had been located and a frame
office erected for his occupancy. While practicing medicine in
Steuben County he was called to attend all the more difficult and
important cases which arose, one of which deserves, from the singular
circumstances of its origin, a more detailed account. A young man
named Munson was in the woods hunting, and started some deer.
While maneuvering to get a shot at them, he put down his loaded and
cocked rifle, holding the barrel with his hand and letting the butt
rest on the ground. As it happened, the butt came squarely down
on a large rattlesnake, which young Munson, intent on the deer, did not
see. The snake lashed its tail, which, striking the trigger of
the gun, caused its discharge, the bullet passing through Munson's
neck. The surprised snake hastened to escape, leaving Munson
bleeding from his very dangerous wound. Dr. McConnell was hastily
summoned, and by his skillful treatment of the wound saved Munson's
life. He was married in Angola in January, 1841, to Mrs. Julia
Whittaker, sister of Judge Thomas Gale, one of the pioneers of
Angola. In 1843 Dr. McConnell resigned his office, and began
practice as an attorney, but death cut short his labors, he dying Oct.
9, 1844. Most of the old settlers remember him as a man of
integrity and true worth; energetic, obliging and capable; possessed of
the finer attributes of manhood, and endowed with a strong, logical
brain. Although first settling in Lima, he was from the beginning
intimately associated with the early, sturdy pioneers of "Old Steuben,"
of whom their descendants may well feel proud. Dr. James
McConnell, though dead over forty years, is still spoken of in words of
kindness and honor. - clipping from unidentified old Steuben Co., Ind.

great
grandchildren Madesyn Hipple and Kloee Fitch. She was preceded in
death
by her parents, 2 brothers – Dean Strawser and Herbert Strawser and 2
sisters –

Donna enjoyed working outside the home when
her children were older. She worked for many years at
Starcraft-Emma
Products in Emma, Indiana. She was one of the
first
supervisors at Emma when the company opened its doors. She had a
long and
satisfying career, eventually retiring in 1988.
Even though Donna experienced serious health problems after retirement,
she was determined to be productive and contribute to the
community. For
many years she was a very proud volunteer at LaGrange Hospital.
Donna’s faith was strong and she was a long
time member of the Church
of God in
LaGrange.
While the weather often affected her health and prohibited her from
attending
church as often as she would have liked, she found ways to stay
connected to
her church family. For many years hers was the friendly voice
other
members would hear from on Saturday morning reminding them of their
usher
duties at Sunday services. She also hosted a home group so she
could
continue to study the Bible and maintain fellowship with her church
friends. In addition to spending time with her family,
Donna found great joy in visiting with her friends on the phone or in
person. She always had a ready smile and an easy laugh.

Miller,
Audra E.
(Crampton) -
Mrs. Clarence E. Miller, Audra, foster daughter of Edward and Lucy
Crampton was
born in LaGrange Co., Indiana on Nov. 27, 1901, and passed away at
their home
on June 9, 1927, aged 25 years, 6 months and 12 days. At the age
of 8
years she came to make her home with Mr. and Mrs. Crampton, to whom she
endeared herself and to all with whom she came in contact. For
several
years she was a suffer from rheumatism, which left her with a diseased
heart. At an early age she united with the Evangelical church of
east Scott, Ind.,
and was an active worker in all its activities. On Sept. 4?,
1922, she
was married to Clarence E. Miller and to them were born three
daughters,
Catherine, Evelyn, and Loleta. In the spring of 192, she,
with her
husband and family moved to Kouts,
Ind., where they have
since
lived. Last Nov. she suffered a serious attack of influenza and
with an
already weakened heart, she was unable to withstand the disease and had
failed
rapidly since that time. On May 27 she was brought to the home of
her
husbands parents, Mr. and Mrs. Edwin E. Miller, and on the following
Wed.,
complying with her wishes, she was brought to the Crampton home, where
for a
few days she was able to be up a part of each day, but for the last two
weeks
she failed very rapidly, and on Thursday, June 9, when medical aid and
loving
care could do no more, God in His infinite wisdom transplanted the
frail and
tired flower to His garden, and no heaven is a little fairer and holds
an added
tie to this family. She leaves the bereft husband and 3 little
daughters,
her foster parents, her mother, and aged grandfather, and a large
circle of
relatives, as they are numbered only by her acquaintances, who cherish
pleasant
memories of her short life here. Her funeral was held on Sat.
from the
Forks church, with Pastor Amos Nusbaum and Silas Yoder officiating, and
burial
was made in Forrest Grove Cemt. May the giver of each good and
perfect
gift bless all who have so kindly assisted in so many ways, during the
time of
our great bereavement in the sickness and burial of our dear wife,
mother and
daughter. - "LaGrange Standard," LaGrange,
