Dallas, Lorenzo - "A Noble Life.  A Brief Sketch of the Life, and the Obituary of One of Our MOST VENERABLE CITIZENS.  A Character Worthy of Emulation, Whose Death Occurred at his Home in Clearspring Township, LaGrange, County, Ind., January 16, 1899."  (?s) with reverence we think of a life filled with good deeds, kind acts and generous impulses.  Such a man was the subject of the last sad rites that loving hands could bestow on one whose life is worthy of emulation.  His declining health in the years that have past made it inconvenient and even impossible for him to attend any religious services or other public assemblages, but he was a man of firm religious principles, and whose benevolent acts spoke more eloquently than words.  A graphic picture is indelibly fixed in our mind by the narratives of his generosity as related by our father (when the writer was a boy) of how he assisted in keeping the fleshless hand of want from being thrust in at our door in days when  it looked dark for the humble farmer, and how, in his quiet and modest benevolence, he never made one feel under embarrassing obligations to him.  We have often on long winter evenings enjoyed his hospitality and cheerful fireplace, when the glowing embers seemed to reflect the honest characteristics of the host, and heard him tell of pioneer experiences as only a clear minded man can.  He was the possessor of an excellent memory, even until his death, and could retain reminiscent details to a remarkable degree, and this fact coupled with his knowledge of books and history made him a character to be admired and remembered. - editor  #2  Lorenzo Dallas was born June 28, 1819, in Preeble Co., Ohio, and died Monday, January 16, 1899, at his home in Clearspring Township, LaGrange County, Indiana, aged 79 years, 6 months and 23 days.  His parents, William and Mary (Grey) Dallas, were natives of New Jersey, and in 1818, after their marriage they moved to Preeble Co., Ohio.  Lorenzo lived in that country with his parents until the death of his mother in 1835, then his father with the family moved to Clearspring Township, LaGrange County, Indiana, in 1836.  Lorenzo then was 17 years old.  His father died in November 1847.  In 1842 Lorenzo was married to Sarah Kitchen and moved to his home in Clearspring Township where he had an unbroken residence for more than half a century.  His wife died in  September 1890.  He was the third of fourteen children, three brothers, George, Jeremiah, and Levi still survive him.  Of his eight children, five are living, as are also six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.  All who were acquainted with him, know his character, and the pure, noble Christian life he led, and his genial, honest, and friendly nature.  The funeral services were conducted at the Green Chapel near his home on Wednesday, January 18,.  Rev. John Paul JOnes, of LaGrange, assisted by Rev. J. Folger, of Albion, delivered the sermon, after which the remains were laid for their last resting place by the side of his wife in the cemetery near the church. - source: Herald, Wolcottville, Indiana, January 25, 1899 - Contributed by C.
